Also depending if you have enough land for the chickens to free range in, you don't have to give them feed for 100% of their diet. People in poorer countries barely feed their chickens, letting them scavenge for most of their food.
I love chickens, rhode island reds especially, but now living alone I enjoy traveling so I dunno how I could ever have chickens again without some automated gate locking/feed systems. I just need to go away for 2 weeks or so at a time.
