It's a double ontondra. To cure something can mean to devail it of an illness/malady, or in a culinerical sense to treat meats with aromatic smoke to preserve it and add flavor. OP asked if deli meats are unhealthy and that Anon said they are cured (deli meats are often smoked); as if they were unhealthy at one time in the sense of being sick but now have been healed or cured in the medical meaning.

Okay so the intended meaning of OP asking are deli meats unhealthy was to ask, are they healthy to eat as food. Unhealthy can also mean sick or injured. The source of the humor is replacing the meanings of the key words unhealthy and cured. It's a little bit hard to explain honestly, it's fairly cunning wordplay that relies on you knowing the synonymical meanings of the two words and mentally interchanging them to get the unintended yet still grammatically valid meaning of, are deli meats sick (unhealthy)? No, they have been healed (cured). That's the best I can do to try and help you to appreciate the wordplay at work here.

If you lack health you are "unhealthy". Things that damage your health are also called "unhealthy".
A cure is something that makes an unhealthy person healthy. If you receive a cure and become healthy you are "cured".
Curing is a method of preserving food. A food preserved in this way is "cured".
A food that damages your health could be preserved by curing. This food would then be "unhealthy" and "cured" at the same time, even though these words are usually contradictory.

It's a double ontondra. To cure something can mean to devail it of an illness/malady, or in a culinerical sense to treat meats with aromatic smoke to preserve it and add flavor. >ontondra

They're full of fake salt, nitrates and meat glue...so yes. Italian and Kosher delis are the only places you can get a actual roast beef, turkey, chicken etc etc put on a sandwich.

      >Italian and Kosher
How much better are they really? How much salt gets left in the meat after koshering?

Ma'am, that is an eleven pound whole slab of deli ham. It has no bones, fat, or connective tissue. It is an amalgamation of the meat of several pigs, emulsified, liquefied, strained, and ultimately inexorably joined in an unholy meat obelisk. God had no hand in the creation of this abhorrence. The fact that this ham monolith exists proves that God is either impotent to alter His universe or ignorant to the horrors taking place in his kingdom. This prism of pork is more than deli meat. It is a physical declaration of mankind's contempt for the natural order. It is hubris manifest. We also have a lower sodium variety if you would prefer that.

      >proves that God is either impotent to alter His universe or ignorant to the horrors taking place in his kingdom
You missed the third possibility in the Epicurus paradox. He could simply be indifferent to our self-inflicted body horror.

Some people think the preservatives, like sodium nitrate, increase your risk of bowel cancer, but even if that's true, you're talking like 1% increased risk over your lifetime or something.

I'm willing to trust the science on this one. Nitrates and nitrites probably don't do shit to hurt you and I have no idea where the hysteria came from if lunch meats contain those

It's manufactured FUD to sell "preservative free" food that just uses other foods that aren't sodium nitrite that are naturally high in nitrites at a premium price to wine moms

There's nitrate-free deli meat but that's obviously more expensive than the usual shit.
