Best snack to accompany a beer

For me it's a Dutch smoked eel sandwich, or broodje paling. A pub here has this and every time it tastes like heaven. Oily fish and the bitterness of the beer...

very, but the only way it's common to get in most places is slathered in eel sauce at a sushi bar, hard to appreciate the flavor of the eel itself

I can go to the supermarket right now and buy eels, live or frozen. I won't cuz I don't like them but I can. And wtf is "eel sauce" anyway?

Special jap eel sauce that deviates slightly from their usual mirin+vinegar+miso base for absolutely everything.

Yeah it makes eel taste really fucking good. Probably the high point of zipperhead food.

Maybe that won't suck. As I said yesterday

My country only ever cooks eel by frying, which I FUCKING hate.
How do the Dutch cook them?

I've only had eel fried and I hate fried oily fish.

I love smoked eel but shit is way too expensive to eat often. The single most expensive smoked fish you can buy in regular stores here.
I'd probably go with smoked mackerel instead, the texture isn't as nice but it's still tasty and costs like a fifth of what eel does.

Admittedly it certainly isn't cheap here, but it's delicious when it's smoked. It's really moist, slightly smoky and very fatty. Almost as good against hangovers as pickled herring

That doesn't look bad but isn't what I'd call a beer snack. More of a stopgap before or after to prevent getting sick. Usually snacks are light fare that do similar, nacho plates or whatever, to keep you drinking.

Even though gerookte paling on toast is objectively top-tier food, I never order in the pub. Broodje Bal with peanut sauce and if possible atjar is my pub food of choice.

Bitterballen are great too, but that goes without saying. I wouldn't be surprised if they become more popular in pubs abroad in the coming years, with all the tourist coming to Amsterdam and all.
