Those are what poor people think the rich eat. A upscale dinner would be prix fixe at a starred restaurant with wine pairing. Average would be just regular food at a bistro or cozy restaurant.

They don’t eat this shit for every meal but everyone knows that actually rich people will casually drop $150 for a couple bites of some fwah gwah.

        Anonymous

No, Not unless it's something a specific person wants to try or craves. I live in a well off section of Metro NYC and know a few wall street types. Generally they eat at upscale Italian or continental places while complaining that their butthole kids are bankrupting them taking a liberal arts degree at a ivy school. One set of parents dropped $1 million on their useless crotch dropping (private school k-12 then $100k year ivy + room and board).

Prix fixe is not a type of food you idiot. Nothing in your argument says they don't eat what OP posted.

Where did that post imply that a price fixed menu is a type of food? If anything, the comparison with bistro dining strongly implies the opposite. You are not very smart.
While we're on the topic, why are actual bistros so uncommon in the US? It's the common type of restaurant I grew up with so the idea that a place has the same menu day in, day out with no regard to seasonality or market is still a little off-putting to me

          Anonymous

You could find a few bristros with seasonal menus in trendy parts of the east and west coasts, especially around universities. I haven't been to enough European bristros to make a proper comparison though.

Rich people pay for "exotic" culinary experiences. Caviar, foie gra, uni, and oysters are all old rich foods. New rich people eat hypermodern style deconstructed popcorn or some other bullshit.

I made popcorn flour once. I air popped some "hull less" popcorn, fan-dried it then ground it into powder. Unlike meal made from whole, unpopped kernels, the flour actually tasted of popcorn. I used it to make corncakes. Is that deconstructed enough?

Sweetbread, European lobster, Belgian shrimp and asparagus, aged steak, proper cheese (not the plastic garbage with the same name), bio fruit and veg, rare whiskeys, Cognacs, beers, wines. If we care about food, which is rarely the case. Really good restaurants before they get a reputation. Or the opposite, for the snobs. I like tripes, tongue, paws, "forgotten" cuts of meat. So what.

Word of warning, unless you live in a mid Pacific latitude similar to Japan don't get it. I have tried it many times here in Canada and it tasted like shit, but when I gave it a try in San Diego it was actually very good. Turns out there's different kinds that thrive at different temperatures, and the ones further north just don't taste good.

I occasionally catch up with some of those super rich international students (chinese) (not sure if this is a thing in america) who drive ferraris and maclarens to class, and they still mostly eat cup noodles, or boba (unless we're going to a restaurant where they spend crazy amounts on alcohol)

It’s very much a thing America. There’s a ton a Chinese students at our schools and they’re all super rich, nasty, arrogant people. They bully professors and get a way with it because the schools need their tuition and minorities can’t be chastised anymore because that’s systemic white supremacy. They also have zero moral qualms about lying and cheating to get ahead.
