Hey Culinaly. I'm not someone who's good at cooking but I want to learn how to cook quick good tasty and nutritious food on a tight budget. To sum my situation up, my mother is a recovering meth addict and she's in the early stage of recovery and she gets hungry really quickly. She's picky about the food so it needs to taste good. I can't elaborate on that more cus I don't really know what her tastes are either. I would like to read about other people's experiences if they were in a similar situation.

Stir fry is great. Make your own sauce and don't pack it with sugar. You can have a meal made in no time especially if you prechop you veggies.

These are questions for a hospital dietitian. When you say in recovery has she just left a hospital or clinic? If so they might have sent her home with some dietary guidelines. Do you have Narcan if she does something retarded?

Well, I feel for you homeskillet. The absolute best shit that I could barely make for myself was rice porridge. There's no appetite, and they don't want to eat. Neither did I. Just start simmering for a few hours until it's edible after you wash the rice grains twice. Chuck in a Campbell's chicken noodle and some kale and you're actually kind of nutritional.
Even without an appetite, it's easy to slog a a mug of whatever.
I was in a car accident and woke up a week later in hospital-induced withdrawals, all I wanted to eat was chocolate, especially with peanuts

former meth addict here. while on it i would eat simple, light 'meals' like rice with clarified butter, a protein shake, soup, yogurt, piece of toast, bag of sour candy. when i got clean i had an insane appetite and would devour everything and often eat 4 or 5 meals a day the first month.
what i'm trying to say is she should have a massive appetite and not be picky right now unless she relapsed which, for your sake, i hope not.
i also would like to add that it's quite common for addicts to relapse the day they get out of rehab. i have done it on numerous occasions.

i craved dairy, salt and meat like a mf when i got off tweak. i would braise cheap fatty cartilaginous meat in the oven or instant pot. i would eat a whole stick of butter with bread. i also ate a fuckload of bananas and avocados. it was nice to have cravings just kinda tell you what you should be eating. how long was your mom on the shit? it makes you retarded, she might just need protien shakes and vitamins for a while to get that brain back in order. it took me like two years to feel like i was actually myself again and i was only using for like six months. does she seem interested in achieving good health, or is she just spun out and miserable? because its gonna be real hard to help someone who's not motivated. also- what does your mom like? besides meth? get her some multivitamins and ensure at the very least, and make sure she's eating on a schedule until she gets a normal appetite. take her on walks and shit too, or maybe to a gym. dont just let her lie around and be a sad fried piece of shit
Maybe ice cream? Lots of flavors to choose from and can be eaten at a semisolid or liquid, hot or cold and with or without toppings. Not exactly the healthiest but if it can help tide her over as she kicks the old habit I figure you could do worse than an ice cream diet for at least a couple of days or a week. Then perhaps move on to more nutritious foods.
looks like OP has abandoned his thread but on a side note, make sure she's getting vitamines, probiotics and fiber. being on tweak and routinely dehydrated is effectively the same as starving or being anorexic and her guts are probably all fucked up. same shit happens with alcoholics and junkies, your bowels are just this dead zone and food will either rot inside you or pass right through you nearly undigested. make sure she drinks plenty of water, or better, shit with calories like juice or milk, with meals. if you just start dumping chili mac and omelettes in her she's gonna have diarrhea or get really constipated or bloated.

In almost every fine dining kitchen the chefs are tweaking or doing yak. So maybe take her to a nice restaurant and see what she responds to on the menu. Then you can recreate that at home. Also keep her away from the busboys who sell
It's called comfort food for a reason. Make your stews, spaghetti, fries, home made ketchup, fresh mayo to the best of your abilities. It doesn't need to resemble brands. It needs to be your cooking and she needs to like it. Even when it's soup - she's not a 10 year old child is she? Set your limits from the start and play it hard but fair. She needs to be present and sober when food is ready. Just like you had to be when you were a child. Good luck.

At the fanciest level still its only as good as how much butter you put on it. Biscuits, bread and pastries? The more butter the merrier.
Just make whatever simple dishes you are capable of making and add lots of butter. It soothes picky eaters and has a lot of calories since you are concerned about simply keeping her full.
