I'd rather have a nice meal than twice a month cumming in some crackprostitute.

No but then again, I'm mostly a chicken and seafood person, at least when it comes to the mains for my entree. maybe it's my middle-class background showing but steaks have always felt like a once every month or two type of meal.

With that being said I just reverse seared a New York strip last week and it was one of the better steaks I've ever made.

What's wrong with using a good method or cooking a steak?

Slow cook then finish on high heat is hardly novel

Somewhat maybe. It's not a matter of affording it but paying $20 for a ribeye just chaps my ass

I bought some prime sirloin at Costco the other day and it was awful, reminds me of why I don't ever buy sirloin. Near flavorless compared to ribeye. But the sirloin was $12 a pound and ribeye $21, but now I wish I'd either bought the ribeye or gone without.

No but I did start buying whole primal cuts and butchering it myself. Can shave off almost $10 a pound and use leftover cuts for ground beef and fat for tallow.

where you get primal cuts? Just from a butcher? My local butcher is ass rape for pricing because he's the only one for like 20 miles so I'm not even sure if it'd be cost effective for me.

20 miles is like an hour and 10 minutes of just driving time in northeast PA. not driving that far to pick up a couple steaks.

Yes. I'm a student so I have very little left at the end of each month. I usually buy hot dogs and bacon. I only very rarely splooge on chicken breast when I feel rich. Before runaway inflation I was able to buy steak and pork chops sometimes. I get like 1300 dollars a month in student loans and almost half that goes to rent+electric.

Yes I meant splurge I had had a bit of vodka before :^)

I cook a lot of chicken these days. I wouldn't say I've cut down on meat in general, but certainly I do a lot less red meat than I used to.

Get the thighs instead. They're a lot cheaper and there's more flavor in them. As long as you don't mind cutting out/eating around the bone they're great value.

        I'll give it a try.

No because my income grew way faster than inflation in the past few years.

  16. 2 months ago

    yeah actually.
prior to the current troubles I was buying primals pretty regularly. impromptu steak outs were pretty normal. I always had enough on hand to bust out 4 or 6 steaks for some friends. this was a nearly weekly occurrence.

would buy mostly strip and rib roasts. they could usually be had for a little over 100 bucks. now they at 200. I could afford it, and have bought a few, but part of the fun of the old steak nights was that they were not even expensive to put on. they felt expensive but were really value oriented.

also primals are harder to come by. lots of retailers have pulled them in favor of higher margin cut steaks. nearly had to beg for one last 4th of July. this has gotten better in recent months though.

No, food is like <5% of my annual income. Though I think steaks are overrated so it's not like I was buying overly expensive shit.

I will literally start murdering people before I eat the bugs. That being said, I used to buy steaks at half the current price 7 years ago. I eat the same amount, but a different cut. It's still more expensive.

  21. 2 months ago

Cheaper meats are around 10-14€/kg range
but oh boy so many other products now cost more than meat and it makes me wonder "why should I buy this thing that costs 2x from 3 years ago instead of just eating meat?"

  22. 2 months ago

Not really, except the price of salmon. I love salmon, but $55/kg hurts my tight ass.
My workplace, bonuses aside, matches the annual inflation and throws 3% on top. I've stopped buying fast food though. $14 for a Wendy's baconator? No.
I never dine out either, but the odd time I've had to attend a 'lunch' I see the prices and wonder if the plate will come with gilding.

No. We don't eat much meat to begin with and we didn't cut down on seafood, either, because that didn't seem to really be affected at all for some reason. Mackerel and mussels are still $2/lb. Pollock is still $3/lb. Shrimp is still $4/lb. Etc etc etc

No, it made me start splitting whole cows with family and friends directly from a local farm for far more reasonable prices. I actually eat more meat now than ever before.

my ex used to make amazing spicy fish tacos. When I first met her, she said she was getting into cooking and this was her specialty. I miss you Claudia, you sexy c**t. She made a dill sauce for it, I think it was greek yogurt based. It went really well together. I will forever cherish this moment in time, I should probably start dating again. I think I am ready. Tldr Spicy fish tacos are pretty good when made with love.
