Yes. I've never seen a television in a fancy steakhouse or sushi restaurant.

My Korean restaurant has Korean tv on, in Korean. That’s how you know it’s a good Korean restaurant. It also has a photo of Obama shaking the hand of the owner on the wall.

I’ve seen TV at sushi restaurants (it no longer exists but the chef there went on to have a prestigious career, it was damn good). Sushi restaurant is apparently the best place to watch the Super Bowl.

i used to eat asian food directly inside the asian grocery store, they had 3 chinamen with 3 massive woks over 3 massive stove burners
the food was delicious because they used their own ingredients the didnt sell and the woks got so hot your meal was ready within a couple minutes, it was also cheap and there was a long bar and one long table so you got o chat with other people who were buying their groceries
then the city decided it was unhygienic and they forced them o get rid of it, they replaced with knives that didnt sell then candy that also didnt sell then two more things i dont even remember
then the city renovated that part of town and normies swarmed it and not only half the stores there no longer have anything to do with asian food or asian anyhing but there are wizzards and other shit performing with large crowds i have to walk around to buy my groceries and when i ge inside the grocery store there are tons of morons blocking the aisles making fun of the products for being chinese, its soy sauce mate you are in the soice sauce aisle. They only buy one soda and 1 snack each
all the restaurants went to shit too the portions are small and the food is inedible

sports is normal for a bar. any kind of cable news is weird.

only subhumans watch broadcast television in the year of our Lord 2023. maybe you wouldn't be so lonely you needed to do that if you spent more time in a walkable city instead of suburban cuck box :3

Did Kelly invent this fantasy restaurant, or are there real places that will broadcast news on multiple TVs?

Baja Fresh opened a location across the street from CNN Center in Atlanta. They played nothing but Fox News on the dozen or so tvs in the restaurant. The volume on the tvs were kept high, though that might have been to run off the panhandlers that plague that part of town.
Across the street in CNN Center, the food court was surrounded by a several large screens playing various CNN stations. Thankfully they eventually turned off the sound and showed the captioning instead. When CNN was news, I didn't mind hearing it while eating there but once it became mostly talking head political commentators, the distraction was annoying.

How common are restaurants in the USA that don't have TVs on, or even background music playing?

Higher end restaurants usually don't have televisions but often will have some kind of music playing, sometimes live music. What gets me is how common it is now for doctors and dentists to have televisions blaring in their waiting rooms.

I went to an upscale sushi restaurant with my family. They complained that the music was so loud that they could not speak. So they just stopped talking and ate in silence.

My favorite Italian restaurant closed when Covid hit. It was chef-owned and he was such a control freak and still did all the cooking to order after over 30 years in the kitchen. His only concessions to age and burnout was bringing in a sous to help prep and make fresh pastas before service and getting his daughter to do salads. The food was excellent and you couldn’t get a table on weekends without a reservation a month out. But he owned the building and took the shutdowns and inflated real estate prices as a sign that it was time to retire and move down the shore rather then just sell the business and let someone else ruin his name.

They played a constant stream of Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, and Dean Martin from the speakers set throughout the restaurant. No tv at the bar either…It was like a Time Machine back to some Italian neighborhood in the 50s.

I miss the amazing food, but I even miss the soundtrack of that place. It truly added a special something to the atmosphere, and I wonder why more restaurants don’t play music that fits the mood and style instead of the drone of news and sports on a tv at the bar.
