when I was a kid in the '90s, Heineken tasted like one of the best easily available beers.
The last time I drank it, it tasted terrible. Did it really get so much worse over time or was I a tastelet back then?
The freshness and storage of Heineken is everything. One of the beers that will shit the bed the fastest of not careful, properly rotated, etc.
Had it at an airport recently because it was either high-end local micros or low-end domestics. Tasted skunked, like most green-bottle and other international ones that are sent in glass. The bottled Michelob wasn't terrible.
Reminds me of my one trip to Macau in Choynah, the Tstingtao tasted great. Just as skunked as the Heinis from the supermarket back home.

They are ok if they havent gone skunky. But thats it, just ok, and usually more expensive than other lagers that taste the same. I cant remember the last time I had one tbh, places that serve it generally have better options

Heineken is a very bottom tier beer in Europe. Sure there is worse (hello 33 Export) but with Kronenbourg and 1664 it's a perfect way to say you have no taste in beer.
If you want a generic brand with a better reputation it would be Leffe or Hoegarden.
