How can I make absolutely SURE that my pork didn't come from pigs who were suffocated in a gas chamber?

How can I make absolutely SURE that my pork didn't come from pigs who were suffocated in a gas chamber? I've seen the videos and I hate to think about the way they thrash and poke their snouts out of the cages, gasping for air.

They should sell pork that has a QR code that takes you to a video of the pork in the gas chamber so you can make sure it was killed

I think it's fair to assume that, when you're looking at the pig's meat cut into pieces in a butcher case, the pig has been killed.

Livestock that dies of "natural causes" vs. slaughter is illegal to sell. Same goes for (diseased) animals which are slaughtered just before they die of "natural causes".

Pork is not but the method is. It is called “CO2 stunning” and is sold as a way to “peacefully” render animals unconscious before the kill shot so they never see it coming. In actuality this results in the animal spending its last conscious moments terrified, confused, unable to breathe, thrashing and gasping for air. If you buy your meat from the grocery store you can bet it was “stunned” like this.

Why don't they just smother them with literally any non-toxic gas other than CO2? Nitrogen will smother any mammal without it feeling the sensation of suffocation.

          CO2 cost almost nothing.
Using expensive non-toxic gas will raise the price for the consumer without adding value to the meat.

seems like a very inefficient way to kill a pig. I call bullshit. also man up.

It is effective, CO2 is more heavy than air. The pig are placed in a small elevator that descends into the CO2 chamber.

holy fuck, this thread is full of “I don’t actually know a thing but I’m going to speak with authority and bumble my way through it”
CO2 costs ~50x MORE per unit than nitrogen, assuming CO2 canisters vs nitrogen generators, and the density of air is almost exactly the same as nitrogen because air is 78% nitrogen….no, it’s not the SAME density, but extremely close, and with proper circulation makes the density irrelevant. CO2 death is a violent struggle bc the brainstem has CO2 sensing cells, and is the brain’s first line of defense in respiration (i.e. your brain senses CO2 elevation in the blood long before it senses oxygen deprevation.) Your reptilian brain is absolutely screaming for air while you’re taking your last miserable breaths. Nitrogen deprivation is a slow, comfortable way to die as there is no brain stimulus for air hunger. It simply and slowly drops your total O2 concentration, your heart stops, you die. The sole reason CO2 is used instead of nitrogen in the slaughterhouse is the speed at which it kills the animal. The increased cost per unit for CO2 is outweighed by the speed of the production line.

CO2 causes brain death faster, there is very little brain activity after unconsciousness

Inert gasses will put them to sleep without stress but the brain will remain active considerably longer after unconsciousness before the animal dies

Here they don't even shoot them or use one of those nail guns, they immediately grab them hang them upside down and cut their throat after they are knocked out by the gas. They do millions of them each year like that.

I wish small farms were still a common thing, instead of a curio for hipsters to buy overpriced "humanely sourced" meat.
Back in the old days, they used to feed pigs one last meal of bread soaked in moonshine and sugar. Knocked them right out, never knew what hit 'em.

        Anonymous

The vast majority of times, the CO2 will take them out in one or two breaths, before they realise what's happening. These videos are taken from farms that either fucked up the concentration or didn't lower them into it fast enough.

Why don't they just smother them with literally any non-toxic gas other than CO2? Nitrogen will smother any mammal without it feeling the sensation of suffocation.

Nitrogen is lighter than air so you can't quickly kill them by lowering them into a gas pit. CO2 actively harms the brain so it's very fast and there's less chance of them popping up fully aware compared to a noble gas that merely deprived the brain of O2 for a bit.

People say that the animals are suffering, others say that the examples you see are due to poor practises at a slaughter house
    How can I trust that?
Lets assume that it is poor practises, how do I know what is the industry standard? How do I know which slaughter houses are compliant?
When I watch industry disaster videos it seems that it's common for managers and owners to be completely incompetent and cut corners for profit, if it's a pig suffering for a few seconds more why would they care?
They refuse to let people film the slaughter houses

Is gassing really an efficient way to kill animals? Seems like a bitch to setup and maintain while the animals also trash around like mad before they finally die after a minute or more.

Imagine simply adding carbon dioxide in a sealed room with no added oxygen. Wouldn't they get drowsy and doze off until they die of asphyxiation? I guess it depends on how many pigs you gotta kill per hour.

i have the same question. there's no way that it is easier to round up pigs and gas them instead of just shooting them in the head. maybe they can even modernize it by using computer vision to automatically shoot at pig heads

Eh I can see firearm use being a bitch. Gotta hit the correct spot or waste ammo while the animal suffers a ton too. Lots of potential for something to go wrong.

Yeah honestly, think about it. Seems like it would be completely unrealistic to gas a large number of pigs in a limited amount of time. Imagine someone places an order for something like 6 million of them? Seems impossible an unlikely.
