Because there are already 3 chains like this. Dennys/waffle house/IHOP took over that niche entirely for chain restaurants, and there are local diners for people who want something different.

it's a shame that my local spot makes banger ice cream but has "tuna melt" next to "pesto rigatoni". it's familial in the same way your dad might frick up trying to make something interesting for dinner and he insists on trying and trying again. it also closes at like frickin sundown now so :/

Would a potato only restaurant make finacial sense? I think if you make the place cheap as possible but with a cozy atmosphere you'd get a ton of business. Cheap and good food for the working man. Even the homeless could eat there for a couple bucks.

I know a high population homeless area in my city. They still eat inside the nearby fast food restaurant. Some areas you just can't control them. I mean they have to eat something. You could also offer free food to police so you could keep the peace in there.

Mcdonalds uses a "30 minutes only" sign inside their restaurants that have homeless populations. The managers only apply that rule to people that look dirty and scruffy lol.

My guess: Home style food is boomer food. And boomers are not very adventurous eaters. Chinese takeout or Mexican about as exotic as any Boomer would try. Maybe this was because the US was still really culturally homogenous up until maybe the 1980s or so and there weren't that many immigrants bringing their cuisines yet. They preferred familiar foods, which was often the bland, homestyle flyover fare that these people grew up eating.

Now, the boomers are dying off and the modern diner tends to be far more adventurous than boomers. I also feel like the younger generations are not as financially secure as the boomers, and can't eat out as often. If dining out is a rare treat, why waste it eating porkchop and mashed potatoes when you could just as easily get something comparatively new and exciting like Ethiopian or hotpot? There are so many more options now that boomers couldn't even dream of when they were younger.

I agree, I tend to get shit that I would be unable to or not bother to make at home. That said, if it's Normal Food X (e.g. pork chops) but the restaurant makes it REALLY good, I'd get it.

Good thing that blogturd is free though, since as proud as he is about pointing out that it's a joke, he never actually investigates or uncovers who originated such a well-done joke. (Nor does he explain any of the rather esoteric 1950s cultural references that he notes are such tip-off. This is why I'm actually encouraged by AI-gen content, since it'lll do a better job of writing than this.)

It's kinda funny that the Weenie restaurant is real. Though that has more mass appeal than a potato-based restaurant.

Upstate New York delicacy, Salt Potatoes, is a bag of small potatoes boiled in saltwater. Upscale places serve them with butter

Because it's a lot more cheap and efficient to get a shit-ton of frozen slop off the back of a Sysco truck and pay some know-nothing,low-end wagie to boil it and heat it up in a microwave.

    >How come home cooking family style restaurants went away?
They didn't. You can find a Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans, or IHOP/WH/Denny's for breakfast all over the place. Plus whatever local fair mom/pop greasy spoon you have near you on top of the chains. And depending on how you define "home cooking", Roadhouse, Longhorn, and others fit that bill.

And "family style" is a Chinese/Italian restaurant thing where they bring out big ass plates of food for the whole table to share. Those still exist, though you may need to be in a big enough city to find them.

What DID go away were the automats, and that is because demand disappeared and joggers became a problem.
