I can't believe people top their meatloaf with ketchup.

I can't believe people top their meatloaf with ketchup. If you're not using a brown or mushroom gravy you're really missing out.

A thin layer of ketchup while it cooks is alright. But yeah I prefer gravy.

Once I made a caramelized onion bechamel to go with it. That was really good and everyone else seemed to like it. Also served it with cranberry sauce. Was kind of like a big Swedish meatball. I think they got it right with the lingonbeerry jam and creamy gravy together.

Ketchup (or barbecue sauce) is the American way. I'm not a huge fan but I understand the appeal. Sweet and savoury is a classic pairing so ketchup on meatloaf works but I'm more on the side of gravy myself, too.

I had that shit when I was a kid the first time I lived in the US and remember it tasting like a mix of ketchup and dumpling sauce. I've not had it since returning to the US as an adult.

meatloaf always seemed redundant when dollar steaks or sausages were cheaper and required less work and were tastier

Dude, a home-made meatloaf is a thousand times more appetizing than store bought scrap meat sausages, and if you are making the sausages yourself you're still putting in more work than if you had just made a meatloaf

seriously meatloaf is so good and easy to make.

          I generally always have
          1. milk
          2. mix of pork and beef mince

Then I mix up the rest of stuff
          1. Filler- crushed crackers or breadcrubs
          2. worcesteshir sauce, dijon mustard
          3. salt, pepper
          4. finely minced onnios/garlic
          5. herbs of my choices

    This sauce is awesome:
    3 tablespoons ketchup
    1 tablespoon honey
    1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Meatloaf gets ketchup, Salisbury steak gets gravy.
