I didn't realize that strains of apple were so interesting to read up about. Just found Cosmic Crisp at the supermarket despite being in Florida and them being cultivated in Washington. They're incredible.

>red delicious
>absolutely not delicious at all
what did they mean by this?
The RD used to be great but over the years it was bred for shiny wax and a long shelf life. The cosmic crisp was actually apple breeders trying to RETVRN to the original taste of the RD
Amazing how apples were allowed to be tasteless garbage for 50 years without anyone noticing
that was just supermarket apples, people used to go out and buy better varieties at grocers or farmers markets or you-pick orchards
they were bad for so long that people would screech if they actually had a good one. I know multiple people who love red delicious because they like mushy apples with chewy skin.
>I know multiple people who love red delicious because they like mushy apples with chewy skin
They need help, like serious mental help
pretty much ate "green apples" exclusively growing up because of this shit.
It's the same shit retard. You can't grow an apple and ship it halfway around the world and sell it 6 months later and have it compare to your local orchard stuff picked off the tree. Red delicious tastes great if you get it locally and in season. The issue is local orchards have other stuff too, and so people associate RD with grocery store crap from the opposite hemisphere
It's kinda like how angus beef actually doesn't suck but everyone thinks it does because that's the most popular CAFO cow
Supposedly "Pink Lady" apples have less pollen so it causes less allergies.
When I eat an apple I get a slight itching or burning feeling in my mouth and throat idk if thats normal. Some types of apples it burns worse
>When I eat an apple I get a slight itching or burning feeling in my mouth and throat idk if thats normal. Some types of apples it burns worse
It's all those delicious pesticides.
Empires are king.
Yep. You can buy apple trees that grow in Florida. You can plant apple seeds from those apples and graft proper flowering stems on to them, too. Like stems from the apple trees you planted initially. There are 3 or 4 "florida" strains. Give it a goog
I always thought the climate of the plant being in the place was a huge factor in the fruit tasting and replicating authentically. Interesting, thanks for the info!
>cosmic crisp
>no stars in it
Jeez louise
It's the white speckles you silly billy.
It's not enough for me
I'm sure it's also something to do some nerd researcher referencing that "Enterprise" is one of the cross pair it came from.
reminds me of those apples in that fantastic mr fox movie
For me, it's gala. Just the right mix of sweet and tart.
It's a good apple. a humble apple.
I'm all about the Jazz
I personally enjoy fuji apples, very sweet taste and always had an enjoyable texture. My mom always enjoyed granny smiths but i'm sensitive to sour tastes.
Apparently when you want to make cider you need a mixture of different apple varieties in order to make the best cider
Damn is that why every cider I've ever had is kinda different? I like knowing this
Some of the worst tasting apples (usually french) make the best ciders. Big sweet tasting apples usually don't make great ciders.
Macoun apples are the best tasting and also the texture and appearance
The modern strawberry was made in a college too.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but this variety started getting sold a few years ago, right? I remember buying a cosmic crisp for the first time in a store around then. The texture, the taste, even the smell of it after breaking the skin, it was crazy how “apple”-y it was. And I usually hate corpo shoved products, like Rockits or Sugarbees, and the cosmic crisp is the definition of a “product” apple, but it really was amazingly delicious.
That said, since seeing it more widespread now, I definitely think the quality has dropped off. Before I could confidently put it heads and shoulders over the other quality apples on the shelf, like Honeycrisps, but now it feels more on the level, in the fact that the flavor doesn’t seem as distinct, texture isn’t as crisp, etc. But maybe that’s just me? It’s still a quality apple, but I haven’t been able to get one as tasty as it was a few years back
That’s interesting, because I felt the same way about honeycrisp when it first came out (amazing the first couple years and then good but not as good), I wonder what causes it.
You’re spot on that cosmic is recent, it was developed by Washington State University and is supposed to be exclusively grown in Washington. There’s another new apple that I like called “Sweetango” that’s really good (developed by Univ of Minnesota) but that one is exclusive to a set group of growers so I wouldn’t be surprised if that one becomes harder to find/more expensive down the line.
When I was living in Washington with my gf we'd drive to Wenatchee and stop at every apple stand along the way, getting a couple of every variety we could. Over a year or so we tried somewhere around 100 different kinds.
The Cosmic is definitely an S tier commercial apple, although I personally like the taste of some smaller heritage breeds myself.
>an S tier commercial apple
That's a nice way to describe a C tier apple.
Cosmic crisps are God tier. There was this purple apple I tried recently while vacationing in New England and I didn't see what it was called but it was something else.
Macouns and pink ladies are great for eating plain.
Gala, empire and Macintosh are best for cooking imo.
Granny smiths go well as an added tartness to an apple pie, while yellow delicious are probably my favorite overall.
I know some are better for cider vs sauce vs pies but I can't remember which ones but if you're baking a pie, it's best to mix them up with some pears as well. And serve with a fat slice of Vermont extra sharp aged cheddar. Oh baby
For general cooking, if it’s soft to eat then it will melt apart into sauce, and vice versa.
As for cider I’ve heard that Newtons Pippin is the go to? I’ve only ever heard it in name though, never seen one
Fruit grower here. I can’t believe all the misinformation and stupid opinions I’m finding in this thread. FYI “pink lady” is not even a real cultivar of apple but a brand name that could refer to several different cultivars including the Cripps Pink. There are many varieties of “low chill” apples you can grow in warm regions like the famous Israeli bred Anna apple, but you can definitely not grow a Cosmic Crisp in Florida due to lack of chill hours (and because Cosmic Crisp is a club apple)
No one said Pink Lady was the cultivar, nor did OP say the Cosmic Crisp he bought in Florida were grown in Florida. Dingus.
Appreciate the knowledge, explains why “pink lady” stopped being so pink. What varieties do you grow and what’s your favorite?
smitten apples are surprisingly good thoever. it's just a basic bitch apple in terms of flavor, but it just does it really well.

APPLE homosexualS
I’ve never seen it in stores before, so I can’t comment on it
yep, my grocery store doesn't sell it so I've never tried it. no idea why they don't sell it.
Have you ever just straight up had honeycrisp? They were bred in my home state and are the GOAT of apples. Not familiar with enterprise though
gotta try it out still honestly
They’re a nice apple, sweet-tart and crisp like an Asian pear when they’re just right. Lots of people have sworn by them since they came on the scene. But ever since cosmic crisps, given they’re usually equal price, my preference has changed to the latter.
But you can never go wrong with the workhorse Gala, and it’s usually cheaper per pound if you’re on a budget
It's the only apple I buy. damn expensive though, jesus one apple for a dollar
Apples have corny marketing names like marijuana varieties.
What do you think of fuji apples
I've tried all of the meme apples like honeycrisp and sugarbee and cosmic crisp but they all suck compared to mcintosh.
I buy all these trash apples with fancy names yet they are nothing but a string of disappointments, there's basically just two types that matter, granny smith for raw eating and whatever yellow/red is on sale for cooking.
there was one apple called jade that i liked a lot it tasted like a better golden delicious
wow an actual useful thread. i haven't tried cosmics yet but will check them out. i'm a big fan of the pink lady.
