Proof, is quite literally, measured by how flammable it is.
You would actually "prove" abv was high by lighting it on fire, which is why 100 proof is the minimum for flammability
Not sure.
I think it has something to do with how clean the alcohol, so you can get away with lower proof on vodka than, say, whiskey.
I'm not confident about that, though. But I'm pretty sure that once you hit 50% ABV, just about anything will light.
If you want to set vodka on fire you have to ensure there's enough alcohol vapour coming off of it. Warm up a closed bottle to about 40*c and you should be able to get a small flame when you ignite a shot.
Probably because they're not high enough proof.
Rule of thumb is about 100 proof or 50% ABV to be able to ingnite it.
Also, alcohol flames are quite hard to see.
needs to be over 100 proof
Really? So vodka isn't flammable?

So why is the general assumption that vodka is flammable?

Upon further thought, how will anyone ever make a molotov cocktail when no liqour even burns now. Sad!
The same way the finns did and everyone else does.
Gasoline.
Why waste liquor?
Is the answer duh
The regular store-bought stuff is usually between 70 and 80 proof, so no.

Use bacardi 151 or everclear
Your spirit is probably 60% water.
If you heat it to boiling first you could ignite it for a little while
looks like goslings 151
Thanks Wikipedia trawl bot, I appreciate your service enslaving humanity to metal nothingness.
You can find overproof rum or Everclear in pretty much every supermarket or liquor store in the US.
Supermarkets in DE, PA and NJ don't sell liquor so you're wrong.
you're quite insufferable, aren't you?
I'm comfortable with just a smoky old fashioned, thanks
you need 151 proof rum, but they don't sell it anymore because people kept submitting darwin award nominations with it
