I want to get an enamel cast iron to make stews.
Le creuset and staub are ridiculously expensive.
Lodge enamels are made in china so it's a no no for me.
What else can I get?

Trawl 2nd hand market for something decent
I'm looking for one myself but not actively
Just kind of hoping to inherit one soon
Some high rated ones I found now
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000N501BK/?ascsubtag=AwEAAAAAAAAAAOI1&th=1
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Enameled-Covered-Dutch-6-Quart/dp/B073Q9K2H3?th=1
Thay's the Lodge, that was my 1st choice until I read they dont make it in the US.
Amazon Basics huh what brand is that
The usa cant even get lead out of their water supply i definitely don't trust them to make quality and safe cookware
Umm well I do
Maybe in your commie shithole cookware is made by municipal governments, but here it's done by private industries competing with one another.
Yeah, competing with one another to cut costs the most and shovel out the shittiest product walmart shoppers can be tricked into buying
i got the unenameled 10" fry pan with the same size dutch oven as a combo (each one can act as a lid for each other, or you can use them seperately wth no lid, or with lids from my other crap laying around.
been almost 2 years no complaints. and i use one or the other and least twice a week
definitely give them a shot before you go replacing on your stainless with enameled cast. regular cast is good enough just not as pretty
>high rated
lol what isn't high rated on amazon? 99% of all reviews are five stars by retarded housewives
trick is to look at the 1 star ratings too.
if the most reviews are 5 star, 4 star, 3 star, etc the item is probably decent at least
if the most reviews are 5 star, then 1 star, then the quality is probably shit
and always remember, never buy the cheapest - 2nd or 3rd cheapest is always worth the price jump
The original Dutch Dutch oven is made my a Dutch company called BK.
Their products are pretty affordable on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/bk-cookware/s?k=bk+cookware
That looks very good but it's carbon steel, I am looking for enamel cast iron
They are for sale too, example:
https://www.amazon.com/BK-Cookware-Bourgogne-Enameled-Dutch/dp/B07XD5BHGY/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=bk%2Bcookware&qid=1698677370&sr=8-11&th=1
The smaller version is also $60 for red and $64 for black.
Forgot link: https://www.amazon.com/BK-Cookware-Bourgogne-Enameled-Dutch/dp/B07XG5W2ST/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=bk%2Bcookware&qid=1698677370&sr=8-11&th=1
Thanks, seems like a nice pot
Yeah, I looked a bit, there are some cheaper pots. Seems a but cheaper than Le creuset.
Thing is I just want one pot to have dor many years, I don't want to have to upgrade or something. I just want a good pot to cook stews for hours
>Thing is I just want one pot to have dor many years, I don't want to have to upgrade
if that's the case Staub is basically the only option because it performs significantly better than Le Creuset but if I was you I wouldn't get the 24cm. you will want to get a bigger one at some point so it's a waste of money. 3.8L is not as much as people think
Thanks, I am set on staub 28 cm
another little piece of advice. the black Staubs are the only matte ones and while I usually prefer matte black over glossy in this case it looks horrendous in person. you can't really see how bad it looks in official pics so keep that in mind
They are usually cheap as fuck though, and if you don't care how it looks, it still functions fine.
white truffle is cheap as well and it's a neutral color just like black but it actually looks good. I would hate to look at that black piece of shit every day for a decade
>just like black but it actually
On regular sale yes, but the matte black occasionally goes on sale even further.
For example, right now white, black, and lilac 7qt is $299. But I got the black matte one for $249.99 last year when the white was $299.99
*laughs in european*
they're literally half that price here. you're getting scammed
That's great for you guys, but turns out shipping ~15lbs of cast iron from france to the US, it's going to be somewhat expensive, on top of the potential fees involved in import/export and the potential for breaking during the trans-Atlantic shipping process likely takes a small % toll on the total units sent.
Le Creuset is usually even worse than Staub in the US on pricing.
>turns out shipping ~15lbs of cast iron from france to the US, it's going to be somewhat expensive
sure but that shouldn't make the Staubs twice as expensive. Le Creuset prices are about the same here in europe as in the US. I guess Staub finally understood their value. realistically they should be much more expensive than Le Creuset anywhere in the world. EU buyers are lucky I guess. I wouldn't be surprised if Staub prices would skyrocket once people realize that Le Creuset is a mid tier brand that has been hyped up by women that put colors above performance and flavor
Over 15 pounds of cast and iron
honestly I would have paid the 50 bucks extra. it's not that much if you consider that these pots will last a lifetime. even the girly colors look better than matte black. they really need to discontinue that thing and replace it with glossy black
No, I am going to get the enamel cast iron staub so probably red or something.
For now I am using what I have and I will hunt for some deal in the future.
Got some good advice here, the BK, Tramontina all good cheap options but I figured I will take the one to have for many years
Dude. THANK YOU. I have been lusting for an enameled braising/casserole enameled cast iron pan for tomato/lemon based meat dishes but I was holding for same reason as OP.... China Lodge!
Lodge did recently release Made In USA enamel Dutch ovens, not braisers, but they are as expensive as Staub etc.
THIS is a fucking DEAL! Ordered. Fuck you Teflon israelites! (Article mentioned enamel, too, so I hope they don't pull a Lodge and actually make their enamel shit in China).
Unfortunately they are made in China. Looks like they fired 45 employees in the year 2000. BK also doesn't stand for "best known", it stands for Berk Kampen.
https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berk_Kampen

Well fucking chink chonks
I don't understand a fucking word but last time I looked for dutch oven alternatives to Staub and Le Creuset I found Bellarini, beautiful design but I couldn't figure out where they were made so I had to look at like 10 different websites before I found some bullshit like "designed in italy and the final step of production is monitored italy"
translation: it's chink shit completely produced in chinkland and because they know that chinks are useless they figured it would be a good idea to do the "quality control" (you slap your label on it) in italy so they could still claim that it's kinda made in italy. I'm guessing it's the same thing with BK
ironically they were too embarrassed to put the MADE IT ITALY label on the dutch oven like Staub and Le Creuset do, probably because they knew that there would be lawsuits
But where are staubs and creusets made?
Made in France. It's written on every single pot.
That' good, that's why they are so expensive
>24 cm, black
Oh my
where do you live? I could get a white 28cm Staub for 159€ right now which is a really fair price. the 24cm ones are even cheaper at 119€
In eastern yurop.
For comparison, the cocotte 28 cm is 300 eur
weird. only certain colors are that expensive here. do you have something like this where they compare all prices?
https://www.idealo.de/preisvergleich/OffersOfProduct/684840_-bratentopf-28-cm-rund-staub.html
I doubt that all 24cm-28cm Staubs are 300€
I lucked out once way back in 2010 or so when I was in a Ross or Marshall's or some similar store and found a Le Creuset set for $190US.
I looked online at the time and the same set was over $400 elsewhere. AND! It was the good one, with the metal knobbed lids rather than the shit one with the plastic knobs.
That same trip, I also found Mozartkugelen, one if the two traditional manufacturers. It was a lucky trip all round.
So try those places.
Well, I am.in europe soooo...but thanks anyway and yeah what a streak of goodluck you had
Does anybody have Chasseur pots?
Wait for a sale or go trash picking
I got a 7qt oval dutch oven never been used for free a few months ago
pic related
places like homesense frequently have staubs for a discount
what kind of discount are we talking? I always liked Staub better than Le Creuset and similar shit, but I'm not trying to spend like $400 on a fucking pot
$100-250
depending on size
I got some orange one made in Serbia at a discount clothing store for $12. works fucking great
That's because you have no idea how good the quality ones work.
define the KPI you use to measure quality and I'll happily provide you with data
crammability
sounds good. I assume you also use iCDin (initial Cram Depth in inches), CDMO (six point moving average of Cram Depth, minimum 10 crams) BFpC (buckle factor per Cram), GRprC (standard gape ratio pre-Cram) and GRpC (gape post cram). I'll measure 3 crams per day and average results per week (assuming weekly sprints) and assume no lubrication (LiCDin is usually worthless anyway)
In this case, since purchasing this serbian cramcrock, I average a daily iCDin of 3.2, mostly via the handle. After some adjustment this week's CDMO is 5.75, BFpC is 0.18 (my doctor is really happy about this) with a reasonable BFprC to BFpC ratio of 48%.
All in all I'd say that's acceptable for $12.
Doing god's work
Henkel.
Used le creuset, get lucky and get it cheap.
I got a 2 pack of Tramontina dutch ovens from Costco a while back that has served me well. I think they were like $70 but I dunno if they still have them.
Ah here they are, and they're on sale for $55 too.
https://www.costco.com/tramontina-cast-iron-dutch-ovens%2c-3.5-quart%2c-5.5-quart.product.4000182758.html
OP this brand (tramontina) is made in brazil in case you're not racist towards LatAm.
Op here, yeah I saw it earlier, thanks for the tip, it's definitely in my sights.
Not at all, I love me some LastSm pussy
Ive had a le creuset for 15 years. just get one u dumbass. also I did not know that about lodge enamel being made in china.
>Ive had a le creuset for 15 years
can you post a pic of the interior? what does the white enamel look like after 15 years?
it held up just fine. it sonly fucked up on the bottom now because there was an emergency in hte middle of my cooking and I didnt turn off the stove and shit burned really bad on it by the tiem I got back inside. still enamaled and mostly non stick on the bottom tho even after scrubbing the fuck out of it with steel wool
can we get a pic? ive had my no name enamel cast iron for maybe 5 years and it looks like hell and i dont know if i'd say it's nonstick but it works just fine so i'm not sure if i want to take the plunge and get a staub
>damaged enamel
Isnt that toxic?
i burnt tomato sauce on the bottom during the emergency. it was black as hell. thats just a stain on the enamel on the bottom. its still smooth. and i say mostly non stick because obviously ur not gonna be able to make scrambled eggs in this bitch without a lot of oil now but with sufficient oil nothing sticks in it
forgot to say I got this as a gift when I got my first apartment when I was 18. so it was being handled by drunk and high college students for a decent bit of its life
thanks anon, much appreciated. these accidents are bound to happen at some point. I'm thinking about getting a second dutch oven, one that is much bigger. I like the white interior when it's still new but i think I'm gonna go with the black Staub again. mine still looks as new after two years
>it sonly fucked up on the bottom
you mean the bottom inside or outside? "mostly non stick" sounds like trouble
Emile Henry is pretty good, but they don't use cast iron, only ceramic.
I got a tramontina one at sam's club for $40 about a year ago and it's holding up great
mom uses martha stewart pans. it's a bit small but seems decently priced: https://martha.com/products/enameled-cast-iron-round-dutch-oven-5-quart-red?_pos=1&_sid=d33a7ab2c&_ss=r
i have this one from zwilling. It was like 60-70 bucks i cant remember exactly
My ma has one such pot, it's dutch and literally 100 years old, everytime we make a stew with it it's fucking divine. Look into dutch pot makers bro
is the enamal coating not fucked?
You mean the BK dutch brand?
I got a le creuset pot as a gift a while ago. it's like $400 apparently but I've had it for 5 years now so that's only $80 a year. I also inherited a bunch from my grandma who bought hers like 50 years ago so that's less than $10 per year.
What kind of autism is this?
>he doesn't amoritize his kitchenware
Blessed thread, a lot of good info in here, thanks!
I got a lodge one off Amazon. Works fine for the slop I make and I don't get mad when I see my fiancé scraping the hell out of it with metal tools.
is she retarded?
That's a man, baby!
Worse, she's a woman
Not reading through this entire thread but I believe Lodge makes a line of enameled cast iron that is made in the USA.
They say on their site that they are made in china
There is a seperate line
>no nipples lids
>white enamel that will look like dirty shit in 2 years tops
>thin walls like le creuset
why bother? you're only paying a premium because they figured they could rip you off if they marketed it as made in usa but we all know what that means... made by mexicans and african "americans"
They're a meme. Just get yourself a large stainless steel stockpot with a heavy bottom. Costs less and no enamel to worry about damaging.
Kent Rollins has indestructible cast iron dutch ovens that hare older than I am. Where do you even get these nowadays? Lodge has them but >canola
it's just cast iron bro. go to your closest camping store and get some. (google tells me some parts of canada have cabela's/basspro)
as it turns out, it's pretty hard to wreck a decent chunk of cast iron.
the anon that won't buy anything from China is probably worried about lead, which is easily tested with a kit from the hardware store (usually used to check for lead in old paints and such)
i have two le creusets and 2 staubs, i found the staub "le cocotte" to be the most versatile. feeds between 2 to 4 people and has a good size. also frequently on sale..
How many liters though? Le Cocotte is available in many different sizes.
3.8 liters, 24cm circumference. black
my cheapo LIDL ones are still holding up fine after many years
I agree there are a lot of normal pots from some companies and even no-names that do the job well but I want something to have for many years and pass down to my kids
After my Creuset enamel chipped, i got a 7liter BK one for like a quarter of the price.
They're cheap, yes, the metal is much thinner than Creusets and they weigh a lot less, but the enamel quality seems to be on par and they just werk™.
>much thinner than Creusets and they weigh a lot less
that's the whole point of cast iron. thin ones don't even make sense.
Staub is 4mm thick, Le Creuset is 3.6mm thick
How are these BK dutch ovens dishwasher safe?
Bumping to keep the thread going. Want to move away from my slow/pressure cooker to a casserole. Love my lodge cast iron skillets but Dutch ovens maybe not. BK heritage is choice but surprisingly cheap vs made in France.
Thread question: You've got 1.5kg of beef brisket. What size are you using to make a batch of your slow cooked ragu? 20/24/26/28cm
I have 3 different sizes to cover my bases.
around 4qt (24cm) a round 7qt (28cm), and then an 8qt (~34cm) oval shape for things that don't fit as nicely in a round dutch oven.
