it's pretty nebulous I guess but I'd say anything with a high price point tasting menu counts
it's kind of also just a feeling and can vary country to country

tasting menus are not fine dining, they are a gimmick aimed at moronic foodies who post shit to Instagram

It's a scam. I've toured France during 3 years, eating all my meals at restaurant, all expenses paid by my boss. I tried every kind of restaurants, from 3 stars to Flunch. It's just food and I hate the pretentious bullshit around it. I would just go to a restaurant closed to my hotel and order no starter, 2 main dishes in the same fricking plate, and a desert, all coming together, no wait, no bullshit, eat, gets up, pay and leave.

good luck with that. expensive restaurants will not serve 3 dishes at once afaik. it's most likely impossible

Yes and that's the problem. I don't go to restaurant to what ? I don't know what you guys do there. I'm going to eat food because I can't cook some. Why are you going to restaurant for ? Some restaurant don't give a shit and some cooks are even pleased when I ask for doubling everything on the plate because I'm fricking starving. Also, I wouldn't occupy a seat for hours. Now, I rarely eat out.

I agree with you, I mostly go to restaurants for special occasions. or sometimes with friends when it's planned weeks or even months in advance. barely just randomly and never visited one at my own. when I have food at home why bother going to a restaurant, takeout is maybe an exception for that matter tho. when you're just lazy and don't want to cook.

occupying a seat for hours is only something you do when you're with a group and have several courses.

Fine dining is worth it if it's good and you think it's worth the price. That doesn't look very good, though. It looks like first year culinary student plating.

Plating is about artistic expression. Not everyone can draw or paint well, the same applies to arranging things. This is why florists get paid a lot, they make the mundane look exceptional. Hmm.

Haute cuisine is more show than taste. Yes, some of the flavors are exceptional and interesting. Is it worth it? It's really up to you, are you satisfied eating at a restaurant where you're leaving unfulfilled and hungry still? In my experience they're preparing food for the validation and "OHHHHAHHH" reactions, not to make sure their patrons leave full and happy.

That's exactly what they're doing and everyone who goes there knows that and is fine with it except for the weird little autists that complain in threads like these.

It’s important to eat foods you don’t normally eat and don’t really like that much. Eat some weird ass mint pine nut marinated mint lamb and then go back to steak and cheese for every meal.
