Negative. You are directly placing the cold veggies under the hot meat with the entire weight of the burger pressing down on it.

I once believed that the patty must come last, so you taste it first after the bun. I've sinced stared into the burger abyss, and when it stared back, I realized that any sort of uniform logic applied to the chaos that is the burger is meaningless folly. Do what thou must, for it has already been decided.

    Sure, Why not?
there are great resons on both sides of the great burger debate. Personally, as if anyone NEEDS to know it, I like a nice toasted bun, and if not pan toasted in butter, then on the grill with a nice schmear of good mayo, then romaine or spin, depending on the mood...
But the I like a few paper thin slices of raw sweet onion on top--So you all can disreguard my opinion...
    >spicy brown or whole grain mustard, sometimes suateed buttons, sometimes pickle and Toms...Heirloom is best, but in a pinch even thinly sliced romas will do.
    >IDGAF if it's real swiss or muenster that I hadda slice myself, or a 90° star of Aldi swiss and 'Murican
    BTW, in this sense, >=implying

          I've never had a 5guys...just the fries.
I'm one of those guys who worked in rstarants long enough to never want to go to one again...for myriad reasons depending on the caliber of restaurant.
Still, i guess it way to go--I like to fix my sauteed toppings to the burger with a nice slice of 2 of cheese; but then it's been a while since i've cooked myself a burger--maybe 2 weeks?

*Friendly reminder: You might want to double up on your meats in the next few days, they are culling massive amounts of animals due to h1n5 from that farm worker dude in Tejas.
Just like the eggs went up from the chicken cull, so goes they all.

I hate it when they do this with the exception of a little bit of lettuce or whatever on a big mac.
For every other burger it ruins the entire texture and flavor order profile. If you have too many toppings or too thick of a slimy gross tomato on top thats your fault, but dont try to put more toppings under the burger to make it work.

Only if you cheeseburger the top of the burger and had to flip it causing the cheese to stick to the crown of the bun. Causing removal to catastrophically rent the cheese asunder destroying the sandwich
. ONLY then may you dress the base of the bun.

Think of it as an exercise in engineering flavor and sequence, that may help.
Ever make a sandwich which wasn't as good because the flavor order was wrong?
sure, It all gets ground up and sent to the same acid lake, but those first few Chews CAN make a difference.

        >Ever make a sandwich which wasn't as good because the flavor order was wrong?
        No

It does, toppings (excluding cheese) below meat tend to make the beef puck slide around, so you end up with a semicircle of meatless sandwich at the end.

        So flip it over

    >Is it ever allowed to put the toppings underneath the patty?
    Depends on the topping.
I regularly put some toppings below the burger because I can do so without negatively affecting the structural stability of my burger.

    Yeah, lettuce is most common

Basically you put stuff under it if you don't want the bun to get soggy quicker

The correct term is bottomings and it is the objectively the best way to construct a burger. All VEG goes beneath the patty for maximum flavor.
