Entirely safe. Pretty good. I think it’s supposed health benefits are overstated, I do fine in regular milk as well, but if given the choice I like raw.

It's illegal because it can cause gastrointestinal diseases for children in particular. The logic is that the child has no choice in what they're fed by their parents so if the parents only give them raw milk the child isn't given a meaningful option to choose to take the risk of disease or not. This is particularly bad because while the gastrointestinal issues that raw milk can cause in children are highly unlikely to kill them outright, it can cause damage that will follow the child for the rest of their lives which again, they don't really have a choice in if their parents will only give their raw milk to drink.

That being said I think they could probably legalize it, just make manufacturers slap big ol' warning labels on each carton.

An actual educated response. I wish they would do that though. They probably just think the average American is too stupid to read the warning labels and actually be cautious. Which I will say is probably true.

Supposedly the big companies are working on ways to make raw milk safer without pasteurization. They probably don't want it legal from smaller farms because once they figure that out they'll be able to get all the profits from raw milk instead.

You probably have mild lactose intolerance and raw milk contains enzymes that help digest it more easily.

Raw milk is also supposed to be probiotic kind of like yogurt or buttermilk. I don't have any issue digesting lactose even in pasteurized milk but I do feel better with yogurt or buttermilk still. That makes me curious to try raw milk, although I can't find it locally and it'd be too expensive anyway.

Yes I am indeed somewhat lactose intolerant, only react to supermarket cow milk and sometimes ice cream though. All other dairy is fine. You should give raw a try if you can get it, it tastes a lot better. I'm an eastern europoor and here it's sold at farmers markets quite cheaply. I am a bit concerned about the quality though and wish supermarkets sold it in a more regulated fashion, but I haven't seen a single supermarket in my country that has it.
Pretty sure I recall hearing at some point that drinking a lot of pasteurized milk over a long period of time can lead to lactose intolerance, because the removal of the beneficial bacteria through pasteurization makes it harder to digest lactose even for non intolerants and eventually overwhelms the system, something like that...
And of course you also have the likes of sv3rige and Frank tufano etc claiming that pasteurized milk is straight up poison, but I don't remember what their reasoning was

I don't think it leads to lactose intolerance but some people naturally produce less lactase as they get older so they might start having trouble with pasteurized milk when they never did before. And sometimes people have trouble digesting it if they've gone a while without drinking it, then they have to start with small amounts at first and maybe they wouldn't have that trouble with raw milk.

There's a lot of focus on how probiotic foods are great for us so there might be truth in pasteurized milk being less healthy. Milk also contains vitamin C which gets destroyed during pasteurization. Some people tolerate it just fine but there are probably also some people who think they're allergic or lactose intolerant when they just don't handle it as well after being pasteurized.
