It is okay if you use instant dashi/miso packets.
It is fantastic if you high quality miso paste, and make your own dashi using freshly shaved katsuobushi.

    It is healthy and soothing.

I've got shiitaki mushrooms and kelp already do you think that'd be good enough for a broth or is it worth getting bonito flakes?

besides that it's just tofu and onions right?

Using either bonito flakes or those dried anchovies is always worth it. They significantly potentiate the savory/umami from the kombu.

you literally need miso paste for it to be miso soup

Unless you're making it with red miso, don't even bother. Drink it to be polite, I guess but use your internal monologue to mock whoever served it to you

nah, high quality white miso mogs red any day of the week

I like it but the large seaweed leaves always stick to your lips when you drink from the bowl which is annoying. 9/10

Miso soup is delicious. Its pretty much a bowl of super salty bean paste and fish essence but damn if it isn't good. I don't know if japs allow this, but pouring miso soup over a bowl of jap rice is dang tasty

      That’s a typical Japanese breakfast

Those are two of the traditional Japanese breakfast foods but I've always seen them eat the rice and miso soup separately.

It’s easy to make a good dashi from scratch and then just add miso paste and some tofu and green onion. Also NEVER boil miso.

It's one of the best effort:flavor ratio foods. You can be lazy and still easily make it even if half of your head is hanging off.

made it a couple of time in different variation. It's alright. If you make large batches of dashi it's incredibly convenient though

It's meh compared to a good chicken broth. It's not bad, but not my first choice.
