Is spam good?
I'm not American so I would have to go to a special store to get it and they will overcharge me for it but I'm curious

You're supposed to soak it to get rid of some of the salt. Same as you would do a salt-cured ham.

Yes but not if you overpay, then you may as well just get cured ham. If you can get it for the equivalent of $3.00 per can or less that's reasonable since you can split it into 2 or 3 meals. Most times I see it in the store it's closer to $6 a can which is nuts, that's more than ham.

where the hell are you shopping that it's $6 a can? even corner stores have it for $4 at most.

Typical large chain grocery stores, but it looks like it has come down a bit since the last time I checked, it was around $5.50. I've just been buying it on Amazon where it's $2.80/can.

Gonna clear up a few misconceptions about Spam.
    1) Spam was NEVER a cheap substitute for fresh meat. It's not *expensive*, but it's not going to be a daily source of protein if you're looking to save money. People buy it because it's shelf stable, convenient, and/or they like the taste.
    2) Spam is not a delicacy. As much as some people say they love it, you're not going to have your mind blown. People love it because there's nothing else that tastes like it (no, all the other pork-loaf-in-a-can knockoffs are not the same), and often it's one of those things they ate growing up.
    3) Spam is not made from random meat scraps off the floor. The ingredient list is accurate.
    4) Spam is very salty. The problem isn't the amount of sodium, but the flavor. You don't typically eat it on its own for that reason, and you will likely not enjoy the flavor if you try to eat it like a steak. Think of it like anchovies.
    5) In light of 1-5, DO NOT BUY SPAM LITE/LESS SODIUM. Seriously. Just don't even bother. Go do something else. Find a new hobby and never think about Spam again. Lower sodium Spam is missing the point, and now you're eating ground up chicken carcasses off the factory floor. You want it that salty because that's a huge part of the flavor.

I'm probably being pedantic, but I'd argue that a big part of spam's initial popularization was due to it's cheapness, although that cheapness was a result of it's logistical properties more than it being "low quality" or anything like that; I don't think it would be much cheaper than any other similar meat coming out of the factory but getting meat a thousand miles of ocean away is a hell of a lot more expensive than shipping spam, at least in the mid 20th century.
There's a reason that the US armed forces purchased 150 million pounds of the stuff. and these same logisitcal qualities probably helped a lot in it's spread across the pacific along side the US occupying forces to places like Japan and S.Korea.
That said, there's a chinese place near where I live that does a bunch of hot pot types stuff, and they use this "luncheon meat" that's a lot like spam but seems a bit more tender and less salty, and it kicks ass in a hotpot context.

        >I'd argue that a big part of spam's initial popularization
Well of course. It was introduced as soldier rations during WWII, and that's how it spread to the locals. At the time the civilians were also having to ration food, so the large surplus of spam did become a cheap and regularly available source of meat. My point about it not being "cheap" was that its enduring popularity isn't really about it being a cheaper than other meats, even in Hawaii where non-canned meats have to be shipped in in refrigerated containers.

        no it is very not-good

it is only memed because non-whites started eating it for historical reasons like korea during wartime and hawaii I guess because not enough local animals or something

        >hawaii I guess because not enough local animals or something
They're islands, in the middle of the ocean. They do raise livestock and grow food, but their primary source of protein was always fish/seafood, and during the war off-shore fishing was restricted for obvious reasons.

    Yes.
    Depends on your taste.
You can eat it cold out of the can on ritz crackers or fry it.
Or boil it and then fry.
Cook it however you want it.

It's not bad, but it's not good. It's cheap canned meat product. Might consider trying it once, but it's definitely not worth import prices. I recommend slicing it very thin and pan frying it.
