good question. about the only redeeming property of fast food now that i can think of is that they have a drive-thru. that's about it.
i'm pretty sure when they raised prices to increase revenue, as usual, they saw a dip off in sales. they panic, they think "oh no, our sales numbers are down. we have to make it up somehow!" so they raise prices again. this negative feedback loop of shedding customers and raising prices continues until they're now at the point of only wanting to serve people who have more money than sense, who will pay whatever is asked of them without a thought because they want their regular burger and they want it now.
i predict $25 non-meal/standalone fast food entrees as the price point norm within 2 years.
morons will still pay it, the low-value customers are gone, fewer employees and materials and locations needed means fewer expenses necessary to make the same revenue which means increased profit.
grocery stores are noticing this as well. i fully expect the bottom 75% of the economy to be effectively priced-out of basic sustenance and survival necessities within 5 years.

Laziness and nostalgia. Lazy fatasses (50%+ of the population) don't care about the drive thru wait time, they just want to sit in their cars while someone else makes food, as opposed to walking inside and picking up food themselves. And immature millennials associate fast food with their childhood/adolescence, so they don't mind shelling out ridiculous amounts of money for junk food the same way they buy overpriced Disney or Taylor Swift tickets.

        Anonymous

        >Disney or Taylor Swift tickets

Both are perfect examples of millennials falling victim to nostalgia marketing. Millennials are willing to pay stupid prices to try to relive their childhood and adolescence, so paying $20 for a fast food burger and fries just like their neglectful boomer parents used to buy them doesn't bother them one bit.

            >so paying $20 for a fast food burger and fries just like their neglectful boomer parents used to buy them doesn't bother them one bit
While I don't eat there anymore, man this is so true it makes me hollow.
Like even if I KNOW the food will taste mediocre, when I jog by the local remodeled McDs and see all the cars in line, I can't help get an inkling of that joy when my Mom used to get home at 9PM after work and brought home McDs - which compared to what we had at home (not allowed to cook until teen) was actually great. At the time.

What's hilarious is that Wendy's could have marketed this exact same situation as getting a discount if you go there off-peak hours but apparently their marketing department is full of complete morons. I'm guessing they just assumed anyone getting fast food at this point is already a moron and won't know the difference but they still shot themselves in the foot. Death to all fast food. People who can't make a sandwich themselves deserve to die of starvation.

      Anonymous

this info came from an earnings call with their investors, so the way they presented it makes perfect sense. they want their investors to hype up and dump more money into the company, thinking "up up up!!!"
the marketing department is probably furious that this was allowed to leak before they did pre-emptive damage control by framing it like you suggest.
the truth, of course, is the version told to the investors. the current prices will be the baseline pricing, and surges will only increase it from there.
they'll use the data of surge sales to determine the average of what people are willing to pay over their current prices, then the floor will suddenly move.
this price ratchet will continue indefinitely - other fast food companies and restaurants and retail establishments like grocery stores and clothing stores and everything will use the same system to hide illegal price-fixing collusion behind a suddenly-legal black box algorithm

          yes
          >Does Wendy's think its a monopoly? Or has anything resembling the market share of Uber?
i don't think it thinks that. i don't think they're actually the ones that are going to be implementing the surge pricing algorithm either, i think a third party company that will experimentally determine min and max pricing ranges given times of day and location and such will be doing the work.
something like a cross between the real-estate rental industry's "YieldStar" (which automatically performs price-fixing collusion for landlords in a given market to maximize the amount of rent you can get as a landlord) and the grocery industry's Instacart-developed "Eversight" which will do something similar, using a big algorithmic black box, randomly fluctuate pricing over time to determine the highest prices you can get out of your customers for a given product at any given time.
the company responsible for providing Wendy's with this system is testing it with Wendy's. they're probably getting some kind of great deal for it. once it's demonstrated as a success, every single retail and restaurant establishment that wants to stay competitive will buy in, just like landlords have done with YieldStar.
within the next 2 years, you will forced to pay the highest amount tolerable for literally everything.

They're still going to do it but they're taking the approach that pretty much everyone said would have been the right PR to do it.
    >Wendy's, in a statement to Reuters on Wednesday, said it "would not raise prices when our customers are visiting us most."
    >Its initiative to add digital menuboards to certain stores would instead allow Wendy's to offer discounts to customers more easily, "particularly in the slower times of day," it added.
So, same thing. They'll jack up all the "regular" prices and then "discount" them during slow times back down to the baseline.

  19. 2 months ago
    Anonymous

I just saw the opposite where it is instead planning to lower prices, not raise them, at times when the restaurants tend to be at their deadest as well as to offer personalised deals and discounts to customers through the digital menu boards.
That horrifies me a little more, actually. Short of signing up for an app and putting in some some sort of Wendy's PIN or ordering on your own device through said app, the only way I see them offering personalised deals before they have your credit card in their reader or Venmo or whatever is through facial recognition.
    Sounds positively dystopian.
