    what's a meal deal

Supermarkets in the UK offer a deal where you buy a sandwich, a snack and a drink for £3. Though the price has gone up to £4 now I think. They offer various items so you can make all kinds of combos to keep your meal deal interesting.

In what scenario would I ever buy a meal deal?

I've got bread in the house, I've got butter in the house. Why would I leave the house, go to a Tesco, buy a sandwich, and bring it back to this house?

Let's pretend you would leave your house despite that clearly being unlikley.
You decide you want to go to the park and sit in the sun, have a drink and enjoy the atmosphere of mirth. Children play. People socialize. Plants sway gently in the breeze. Women sit out on blankets reading books with their sexy feet in the air. The sun washes all of them in its glory. You become peckish, but you didn't make food at home to bring with you. You decide to go to the store where you find a meal deal for $4 and, realizing that this is a decent price to pay for some light food and a drink, you buy it. You go back to the park and eat your food in the sunshine and wash it down with your drink.
If you're not extremely cheap or a joyless bastard then this scenario should appeal to you and make sense.

Officer workers, people going for a regular shop who can't then be arsed cooking when they get home, people in hotels or on business trips and so on. Pretty much anyone who would buy a decent packaged sandwich (I think I've read in America these are always terrible options but here the quality is fine for the cost usually) since the drink and snack are just add-ons.

Yes, at least in Canada and the US those kinds of prepackaged meals you can get at the grocery store are generally pretty awful and never worth the price. $4 in UK funny money isn't a bad deal tho, honestly. I don't think I've ever seen one that had a drink come with it here in Canada, usually you pay $4-10 for the worst food you've ever had in your life.

              >Yes, at least in Canada and the US those kinds of prepackaged meals you can get at the grocery store are generally pretty awful and never worth the price
That'd be the big difference then. They aren't exactly high quality food in the UK (usually there are higher end expensive ones too) but perfectly acceptable for the small amount they ask for it and the supermarkets and shops that do the meal deals have been in competition so hard prices are kept low. It's also used as a loss leader to get people in to the shops. I've read in a few places that the UK is weird for packaged sandwiches being both so universal and not terrible so that might track. I'm not sure what the American equivalent would be though. Unlike, say, takeaway food it's something that could keep for a few hours if you had to shove it in a car or something for a trip.

              >$4 in UK funny money isn't a bad deal tho, honestly.
It's probably more like $5 given exchange rates but it's a solid enough deal yes. You get a soft drink, a main (sandwich, salad of the meat + leaves variety, shitty box of sushi or whatever) and a snack (crisps, pork pie, little shitty box of sushi, fruit, samosa, whatever). Of course you've also got decent odds of breaking 600-800 calories without thinking about it but that's a different problem. While obviously people could bring sandwiches from home for lunch most people aren't going to bother with that much effort + having the variety to pick from is something that makes the wagie day tolerable.

I don't buy food based on "deals" I buy food based on what I like to eat, and only that.

I used to work as a kitchen clerk in a HyVee. Employees got $5 meals at our kitchen or $5 deli sandwich at our deli. I'd either get a flatbread sandwich with sliced meats, cheeses, and spicy sauces or subs with the same and an apple or banana
