Mom's bakery is losing money

So she had to let go of some of her employees. I wake up early in the morning to help her and after finishing up, I get ready to go to school. My payment is just a hug and a kiss, but I guess I will miss it once she's gone so I guess I will help her out in the bakery more often. She's still in her 40s but I would rather not have any future regrets. My sister has celiac disease, so she can't help in the bakery either. Oh well. The things I do because I still love my mom. I don't even like wheaty food. I would rather have rice lol

    why cant celiacs bake

Because our bakery bakes in house, so there's always tiny flour particles in the air. If it gets inside her nose then it will irritate her since the respiratory system has some connection to the digestive system. I'm just parroting what I remember her doctor telling us lol

Thanks! I wish I was this easy going on my mom when I was younger. But I guess the past is past lol

I'm not losing anything and I'm doing it out of free will though. She's paying for my tuition and both me and my sister are financially dependant on her anyway so it's only fair.

i think if she's handling your tuition it makes a lot of sense to keep it up. sounds like you're doing it out of love anyway and im sure she recognizes that and is extremely thankful for it every day no matter how explicitly and frequently she states it

Exploiting her son for unpaid labor will not work in the long run, because he will get sick of and and eventually leave with resentment.

She'll need to try something else.

It's only temporary. I'd rather not see the bakery close and we going back to where we were, God forbid

Yeah, pretty much. She shows concern whether I'm able to keep up with classes since I'm losing some sleep but I manage ok lol

Thanks. Interesting looking buns tend to pop up on my Pinterest feed, so I save them when they do lol

Anon, think of some new ways to make money. You have ovens. Do a pop up pizza night once a week, see if it takes off.

I mean, it's not like I haven't told her about ghost kitchens and whatnot. We could totally do something like that since we do have an industrial kitchen on premise. I think she's hesitating because most of her expertise lies on baking, not cooking. Even though she does technically cook certain fillings that go inside buns but eh. I guess it's completely different to cook to order than it is to bake in advance.

Try to gather feedback from customers, it might be a way to find how to improve sales. For example, ask them where they usually get their bread (instead of your place) and try to see if there's anything you can do to make them choose yours more often. Also, where are you from? Do you actually do bread and pastries the "proper" way or is it premade mix stuff (assuming you are american, if you are euro I would find it extremely weird for you to be doing that).

We make everything from scratch. I think the problem is post covid inflation. Our books are a mess. I think she should try to fix that first. We have decent reviews. You can physically notice that there's less foot traffic on our street. Probably also contributing to the low sales..

Yeah I don't eat pizza myself at all so I have no experience whatsoever. If we ever decide to do pizzas then I'll try to think of this place.

Maybe focus more of the top selling articles and cut some that are only there for variety's sake. Streamline your fabrication process for the top sellers and reduce the extra expenses that come with including different stuff. Try to compensate by making the reduced number of options be of really nice quality.

Have you ever tried looking at the books? I’m very curious what’s driving the loss of business and money.

Has there been any consideration for putting up some things on doordash?

Also I’m assuming it’d be rough to do a complete clean at the business but maybe there could be some gluten free options baked and wrapped at home then brought in. Im very surprised how much the gf baked goods go for when stuff like Bob’s Red Mill 1 for 1 flour seems fairly cheap at the restaurant supply store (it doesn’t work for everything but for stuff like cookies and brownies it’s an easy swap).

Try to take care of yourself OP, I’m assuming you have to wake up early so you absolutely don’t want your grades to suffer, or your work to prevent you from internships. And never ever take out a student loan to help prop up the business.

Hey kiddo! I don't know if this is possible for your budget, but if you specialize in gluten free/dairy free/egg free, etc. desserts, it could be a niche. Start with gluten free. The flours are frankly weird, and will take some tweaking. But gluten free is both trendy and a legitimate allergen, so there's a market there.

Why is the shit losing money? Is it due to no customers or because the business bleeds money on low margin products?

So, I can't cook or bake for shit. But, I'm an experienced sales consultant. I help idiots sell their retarded ideas. I've run a business or two.

Here's what I tell all my clients, OP ... you can ignore sales and marketing for as long as it takes you to run out of money.

My going rate is probably more than your car payment, but I'll wave my usual fee if you have any questions.

You need to step in and help her more with marketing and running it before it goes under. See if any business majors could help as a project for part of a class or something.

its literally impossible to fuck up a bakery, just make sure your
    >bread
    >pies
    >sausage rolls
    are on point
even a bakery 2 hours drive from anything in ass fuck nowhere will sell out by 8:30am if it does good fucking pies

Do you have a friend who a graphic designer wannabe who can help you out with logo, business card, and flyers? Do you have a good presence on social media (Facebook for boomers, TT/Instagram for zoomers)? What group can you appeal to get more business? Cops? I knew a place that had marathoners and cyclists come by every week after their big runs. Do you do seasonal shit like pumpkin Hispanice, apple cider, etc.? Do you cater to sports fans / your local teams? Have you tried getting a pop-up tent for sports games and local festivals/events?

I hope things get better for your mom's bakery and your family in general OP
    🙂
You should find a qt3.14 gf who likes baking so you can marry her and force her to help your mom until she pops out a few kids
Ideally once the kids are 10 or so, she should take over the bakery from your mom so she can retire and spend all day spoiling her grandkids

Good luck, anon. Plenty of suggestions in this thread; they're all going to be hard to actually implement. If you really want to see the bakery succeed, you're going to need to change something big, and your mom is going to have to see that, too. It's easy to cling onto the past, even as it drags you down. Try not to let that happen to you and your mom's bakery.
