My local shop has $75-150 bottles of various irish whisky and scotch without security locks, but the Johnny Walker Green/Gold/18 (formerly Platinum) all have security locks despite the fact they're all between $50-100.

It's because of brand popularity and the looters wanting clout at parties
Hennessey is probably fricked up from all the rappers singing about it, yet I've never heard of this being an issue with Remy Martin 1738

Early Times and Evan Williams helped get me through undergrad when I couldn't stand drinking Mr. Boston or Popov. Looking back, it's a miracle I didn't damage my liver. Nearly a fifth a night for like two years.

        Anonymous

it's not a miracle at all that it didn't cause long-term damage to your liver (though i realize you probably meant you were surprised to learn that fact), in fact you weren't even remotely close. the liver is the most resilient organ in the human body. it takes about 10-15 years of serious drinking for the liver to begin to incur irreparable damage, which is insane when you consider the cumulative stress required to reach that threshold. it simply regrows itself. when living donors are used for liver transplants, about 40-50% of their liver is cut off for the recipient, and within 3 months, the donor's liver is back to regular size and function. based liver.

I've had the blue label, it's actually pretty good but not $250 good. JW is only good past the double black label, the lower labels are all shit. They need to toss the lower labels and drop all the upper labels prices to match the quality.

If the bottle is overly ornate, it's usually trying to compensate for the crappy liquor in it. If it looks like a bottle for liquor, it's fine. And I am not spending the money on some outrageous richgay drink to see if it holds true at the upper end.

            Anonymous

At least whisky has a wide selection available, from all over the world in a much wider range of flavour profiles and price points compared to rum. You're far more likely to find a whisky you like compared to rum. And that whisky will likely be cheaper and easier to find than decent rum.

              Anonymous

Just buy some Havana Club 3 for 10 bucks. I know so many people that think whisky tastes like horse or paint thinner while they never claim that with rum.

Good bourbon by price-ish. (Nowhere close to complete; just a few ideas for bourbon noob)

      Under 20 bucks:
Mellow Corn isn't technically bourbon, but it's cheap and drinkable
      Wild Turkey 101

      20-30 bucks:
      Old Forester 100
      Elijah Craig
      Knob Creek 6
      OGD 114
      High West Double Rye

      30-40 bucks
      Oregon Spirit
      Michter's US1
      High West Campfire

Over 40, the list gets very long.

It's worth the price just to get the bottle.

Peel the label off and it's a great generic bottle for the shelf

I didn't see what the deal was until I saw the refractions. Damn, that's tasteful.

Someone left a bottle of this at my house. After it was empty I refilled it with Evan Williams.

I wish they did it with green/gold instead of black.

I'll happily buy meme movie/TV or video game tie-ins though. Just wish they did it with better tasting stuff, usually those collabs are for bottom shelf or middle shelf quality at best.

no shit, they're using the tie in as a way to shift stock they can't sell, and jack up the prices at the same time

Do you have the box? I've seen prices ranging from 400 - 1000 pounds at auctions. Not bad for a purchase of 105 euros.

If you're serious, they put the fresh fruit buds into the jar before they're fully grown and they finish growing inside, then you just snip the end off, clean out the glass and wash the pear, then fill it with your product and seal it.

Fair enough I guess, still very much on the middle-low-end for alcohol though.

$50 is honestly my general starting point for something I actually WANT to drink. Below that price point is for mixed drinks and getting drunk, not really drinking to enjoy the drink itself.

    Old Gran-Dad Bonded.

A plain, unembossed 1 liter bottle with a cork stopper and a modestly sized, stylistically timeless label. It has a simple weighty elegance that you don't see on liquor store shelves anymore. Like something you'd get at a frontier saloon or pull out of your saddle bags at the end of a day on the range.

Also the whiskey is pretty good for the price. The high proof and high rye content make a splash of water or an ice cube a welcome addition.
