My smoke detector goes off every time I cook steak.

My upstairs smoke detector goes off every single time I cook steak. The hood on my stove doesn't vent anywhere. Is it normal for a smoke detector to go off when cooking steak? I follow the advice of getting my pan as hot as I can before putting in the steak.

Does your smoke detector also go off when you do not cook steak?

Good idea. I took mine down tonight, that's what made me think of it. It's always the smoke detector at the top of my stairs that goes off

pan nice and hot, knob of butter
steak room temp, coated in salt
in the pan, 2 minutes per side
no moving it! you've got to let it get that crisp, crunchy seared exterior, that's what the punters come in for
pan straight off the range into the oven 350 degrees for 5 minutes
    rest 10 minutes, done
    fucking delicious

No way your pan is hot enough if you're using normal butter and it doesn't burn.
Use clarified butter instead so you can get a proper sear.

i do a lot of sjw shitposting myself on the 'chon and while i do appreciate it when others do the same, you must have some finesse if you want it to come across as genuine. don't just go straight to calling people racists etc, be vague and have others fill in the gap. this, on the other hand, is honestly just pathetic.

Smoke detector also detects carbon monoxide, you know the colorless, odorless gas that will actually kill you.

maybe there are some dual purpose smoke / carbon monoxide detectors but the vast majority of smoke detectors will not detect carbon monoxide..

They are not common, the default for new construction in the United States in the cheapest option available, which in this case is radioisotope smoke detectors, if you want anything better you have to buy and install it yourself.

usually some chemical reaction which changes the color of something and is sensed by a dip in the amount of light hitting a photodiode. or a direct electrochemical reaction causing a current spike

why are the replies in here so retarded lmao?

you basically wanna open the screen doors and windows of your house. Look up "high smoke point oils" and use a high one like avocado, turn on the fan, and finally coat your steak with oil and use less oil in your pan.

Bonus tips: make sure you are pressing the steak into your pan (not hard asf) in order to reduce cook time, get a better sear, and have less smoke as there is less time for things to burn. Also if you are adding butter at the end, make sure you turn the heat down 1 minute before you do it as butter burns and not only tastes bad but could be aiding the smoke

Can Americans not turn off their smoke alarm? If you’re personally in the kitchen, you probably don’t need it right? Or are their houses so shoddily built that things just go up in flames with enough regularity that you need a smoke alarm in places that typically don’t catch fire?

The smoke detector that goes off is upstairs, which is typically not where kitchens are located
