Pokes

Hey! I wanted to know what you guys usually put in your pokes. I've never tried poke but I'm afraid of ordering it with ingredients that don't go together and not liking it. Does anyone know any suggestions?

I suggest you stop being a dumb fricking moron and just go order a bowl and ask the person to give you what people most commonly order rather than cry like a b***h online because you're too much of a pussy to try something new without people holding your dipshit hand like a 5 year old

Maybe OP is autistic and lacks the cognitive ability to make decisions in a timely manner for him or herself. Did you ever think about that?
People aren't moronic just because they are brain damaged and can't function on a basic human level.

    >poke bowl
what year is it? i thought this trend died out in 2018 or something

I don't give a frick what year it iis, a bunch of fish in a bowl will always taste good
OP if you are going to a typical poke place, I'd say just go crazy with the toppings and you'll probably like it. I got myself a tuna, spicy salmon, shrimp poke bowl with jalapenos, sweet onions, pineapple, and tempura flakes

I like hoedupbap, which is just Korean poke. I'm not gutsy enough to prep and use actual raw fish on my homemade stuff but when Hmart has fermented skate (hongheo-hoe), I use that. If not, a package of smoked trout, which is a tad salty. Alternately, I once bought one of those large plastic bowls of tuna sashimi at the ridiculous markup and used that.
    As for additions:
sliced, salted, pressed rinsed and dried cucumber, shredded carrot, cancer-pickled radish, blue-cooked cabbage, blanched red cabbage and kochujang sauce.

      >hongheo-hoe
how is the hmart one? I've had it at a traditional Korean place once and it was like 80% cartilage and slathered in gochujang sauce so I couldn't really make out the flavor. I've heard it's supposed to be one off the most foul smelling korean foods though and that says a lot

        >80% cartilage
        Accurate.
        >slathered in gochujang sauce
        Hmart one was relatively plain.
        >I've heard it's supposed to be one off the most foul smelling korean foods though and that says a lot
I've never had any other except the Hmart one and after eating it the first time, I read online that it's supposed to have a faint taste of ammonia and reek to high heaven but I got none of that. It just tastes nice and somewhat similar to other firm fermented fish foods I've had (not things like padaek/prahok).
It also has a slight fizziness to it similar to old kimchi that I enjoy. idk if this is typical of fermented skate wing or if it's just particular to Hmart's but it's good.

I always got spicy tuna poke when I was stationed in pearl harbor. They sold it pretty much everywhere, but the best I ever got was from a shitty little grocery store on the north shore, right near sharks cove.

I usually put all the stuff that needs to be refridgerated or frozen in my pokes so they don't thaw too much on the way home.

Poke bowls are poor, bland, obnoxious imitations of rice bowls. They suck, like pretty much any food that comes from Hawaii. Just go eat an actual rice bowl, not whatever the frick that is.

I think they're pretty tasty when done right. The cultural juxtaposition of hot rice and cold raw fish makes for a stratum smashing effigy of societal cohesiveness.

they suck because most californians, much less any other philistine, can't make poke fricking right.

raw ahi tuna marinated with sea salt, few onion slices, pepper flakes, dash of sesame oil, ogo. Soy sauce optional, but use less salt. serve over rice. let it rest for 30 minutes in the fridge. it was a simple meal for the working class, not some bullshit hawaiian chipotle.

of course, there's a billion variations, like octopus poke or spicy ahi, but it is always mixed beforehand.

i like spicy tuna and shrimp for my protein, especially when the tuna is the consistency of cat food. then cherry tomatoes, avocado, crab salad, seaweed salad, onions, corn (occasionally), jalapeno, green onion for the toppings. for mix-ins, furikake, sesame seed, masago, and nori. spicy mayo/yum yum and eel sauce on top. sushi in a bowl, love it.
