          Anonymous

Yes, but commercial salmon season doesn't start until June. So to get fresh at this time of year, you have to buy them from Indians, and even though they can catch as many as they want, I believe they're restricted to line and net fishing (not trawling). So basically, it's expensive this time of year.

That specific type of salmon, King/Chinook is also less prevalent up in Alaska if I'm not mistaken. They mainly spawn further South in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and Northern California, so that could effect the price up there in Alaska.

Chinook are being wiped out by a number of factors.
They will probably be functionally extinct in the Yukon and Interior Alaska in a decade.
Zombie populations in BC and the lower 48 will probably continue to bleed taxpayer dollars for a while.
Ironically the Great Lakes population will probably become the healthiest self-sustaining population by 2035.

Farmed salmon means they raise all the same fish in a single body of water, typically a pool. They literally all swim around in the same water they all shit in. You risk eating so much bacteria and parasites eating farm-raised. I always avoid farm raised. Wild caught is the best.

I have a side of salmon in my fridge right now. I salted it on Monday, and sometime this evening it will be ready to eat as gravlax. Store made lox/gravlax/smoked salmon is like $24/lb minimum. I can get salmon for $9.50/lb. It does lose probably up to 1/3 of its weight when cured, so really it's $14/lb this way.

Good luck eating 53lbs a week to get to the upper limit of risk, also the selenium in salmon prevents absorption of mercury in the first place so it's entirely a non-issue.
      >microplastics
At this point they are in absolutely everything you eat to some degree, but salmon is not a major area of concern regarding microplastics. Unless you're eating farmed salmon which may have significant amounts of microplastics mixed into the feed they are given.
