If it is served between two slices of bread, then it is a sandwich, regardless of filling.
If it is served in a breadroll (or burger bun, if you must) and contains either sliced or shredded meat, hot or cold, then it is a roll (or whichever one of 40 names bongs have for rolls). (eg. Ham roll, chicken roll, hot lamb and gravy roll.)
If it is served in a burger bun and contains one or more patty-sized pieces of hot meat, such as a hamburger patty, ground chicken patty, or a breaded chicken breast fillet, then it is a burger, regardless of other ingredients.

I hope that clarifies things. t. Aussie

I can understand the position. I guess we're used ot zinger burgers. you'd get laughed at if you tried to market anything as a chicken sandwich here, it sounds like something you'd make at home from two slices of white bread and some leftover roast chicken

A burger is a Hamburg steak-styled meat sandwich. So if you use chicken to make a burger patty, then it's a chicken burger. Or salmon used in the same way, it's a salmon burger. But if you take a whole piece of chicken and put it between burger buns, it's a chicken sandwich. If you take a whole piece of steak and put it between burger buns, it doesn't magically become a hamburger, it's a steak sandwich. You fricking numbskull I will END you

In my home country there are many vegetarian people. The most popular burger is the anday wala burger, or egg shami burger. In this long burger, the meat is replaced by fried eggs or omelet, but the other burger ingredients are the same.

Look. I'm an American living abroad, and I have many international friends. Iv'e traveled all over the world.

I've had this argument so many times with, mostly, Europeans.

What people outside the USA don't understand about the American lexicon is that 'Hamburger' and 'Ground Beef' are SYNONYMOUS.

Let me say that again: In American culture, GROUND BEEF = HAMBURGER.
    HAMBURGER = GROUND BEEF

If you go to a butcher in the USA and ask a butcher for a pound of hamburger, he will hand you a package of ground beef.

Non-American countries think anything between a bun is a "hamburger."

Americans think anything that is ground, and patty shaped could be a hamburger.

Consider pic related: where is the bun exactly?

I hope that clears things up for all the non-Americans in this thread.

      Anonymous

Yeah, its that simple, but its euro/bong posting hours right now. Only Japan seems to understand this (they serve ground beef patties by themselves, no bread at all, and call it hamburger).

Let's address the real elephant in the room; why do Americans think they're allowed to call ground raw meat "sausage"?

        Anonymous

        >why do Americans think they're allowed to call ground raw meat "sausage"?
We don't? If you squeeze raw sausage out from its casing, we still call that 'sausage.' We make sausage patties from that. Is that what you mean?

          Anonymous

          >sausage patties
a sausage is defined by its casing and shape, take the sausage out of the sausage and you just have a "meat pattie"

            Anonymous

If I'm making huevos rancheros, and I squeeze my chorizo sausage from the casing into the frying pan, it's still chorizo sausage meat. You're being pedantic.

Sausage patties are absolutely a thing.

If I just eat sausage casing, I don't say I have eaten a sausage. If I just eat the meat from a sausage, it still tastes like sausage. Calling it a meat patty is disingenuous.

Maybe. You could get away with it, but it would be better to call it a sausage sandwich. "Burger" is meant to imply ground beef and there are very few exceptions.

  18. 1 month ago

Someone needs to write a sandwich phylogeny.

Sandwich could be two different things depending on the context.

Something between a sliced roll could be considered a form of sandwich, but there is also the "Sandwich" as the common colloquialism that evokes the image of something between two slices of sliced bread.
