Why is he comparing a spoon made specifically for soup with an all-purpose spoon? Like b***hing about a fork being better than a skewer.

Right is specifically a soup spoon. A general purpose table spoon is more ovular.

I get on Culinaly but I hate seeing this on other boards where it's relevant because it's even where world leaders and things make announcements now. Plus threads like this can (often, maybe not this time) lead to a lot of discussion, who cares WHAT starts a discussion if it leads to a discussion?

I like Japanese cuisine and I like using chopsticks. But I hate the spoon. It doesn't feel natural to use, you don't put it in your mouth but are meant to sip from the tip.
They don't like it either because they sip directly from the bowl anyway. It's just not very good.

I agree. Trying to put that Japanese spoon in your mouth is jarring. Western soup spoons get plenty of soup and they feel good on your lips.

So you're telling me the Japans had spoon technology but couldn't invent a fork?

that was how most of europe was until only a few hundred years ago. Everyone from the romans to Christopher Columbus sailing the ocean blue made do with only a spoon and knife (though at that point the italians were popularizing forks in europe, just slowly).

        >In the Roman Empire, bronze and silver forks were used, many surviving examples of which are displayed in museums around Europe.[3][4] Use varied according to local customs, social class, and the type of food, but in earlier periods forks were mostly used as cooking and serving utensils.
        >Although its origin may go back to Ancient Greece, the personal table fork was most likely invented in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, where they were in common use by the 4th century
Next time just shut the frick up, will you?

Black person, the average person didn't use forks. They weren't popular.

          >The fork's adoption in northern Europe was slower. Its use was first described in English by Thomas Coryat in a volume of writings on his Italian travels (1611), but for many years it was viewed as an unmanly Italian affectation. Some writers of the Roman Catholic Church expressly disapproved of its use; St. Peter Damian seeing it as "excessive delicacy".
Forks were exclusively for homosexuals (Italians) until the 18th century.

My very favorite soup spoon to eat with is a western styled spoon called Nasco Vassar. Nothing else feels right. Though it's western styled, it's actually a Japanese spoon.
