The tragedy is that the wish granter will grant what the person in his heart desires most, even if he doesn't himself know what this is. So when Porcupine asked to have his brother live again, but wound up with a bunch of money instead the wish granter indirectly revealed to him that deep down he loved wealth more than his own brother. When confronted with this true image of himself, porcupine couldn't stand it and killed himself. It is a commentary both on the imperfect nature of man, and how we reconcile that which we desire to be with that which we in fact are

Surely Tarkovsky knew if the man knew he could get anything he wanted and asked for his brother back, he didn't care more about money.

      >Gets what he really wants
      >Kills himself in shame

      >Gets what he says he wants
      >Lives happily ever after
Doesn't this add an additional level to things? He says he wants his brother back, but secretly he'd rather have money than his brother, but his heart's true desire is to be a good person, or at least a better one than he is. A better wish to grant would have been to make him not care about money anymore.

He never wanted to be a better person, if he did then he simply would have been. Wealth was always his true desire, and that realization is why he was ashamed.

          That's not how it works.

          >Wealth was always his true desire, and that realization is why he was ashamed.
If he hated himself so much because of it that he killed himself, it wasn't his true desire. It's a thing that he might have thought he wanted but ultimately didn't find fulfillment in.

You'd find a way. But you won't because you don't want to.
There's no barrier to being a better person; it's not a physical object or exclusive status. You acknowledge your shortcomings and aim to better yourself, and the only thing preventing that is you.

he can try but there are some things out of your control. however there comes about the issues of agency when it comes to personal choices like being a better person.

Because "a ton of money" is a physical object and not something you can simply choose to have. Obtaining it isn't something that he has exclusive control over.
How do you not get this?

You can absolutely make choices that will lead to having lots of money, but most people don't because money matters less to them than they think it should.

The idea that you can just decide to be a better person is explicitly contradicted by the film. The fact that there can even be a difference between what you think you want and what you actually want demonstrates that there are portions of the psyche that we as individuals don't have access to, at least not without outside help.

Nah, the truth is that most people are useless. They aren't innately talented, they don't have any unique ideas, they don't have the drive to upskill, etc.
For these people, the best they can hope for is to be middle class, but most will end up being lower class because they don't have the intellect to budget and/or think about any further into the future than next month.

There's a lower percentage of literal morons among rich people, but those don't count for a large portion of poor people, either. There's a lot of studies about how "muh high IQ correlates to financial success," but then you look at a graph of IQ scores among the wealthy and it's still a normal distribution centered in the low 100s. It's all just cope, rich people didn't get rich by being better.

Good tires help you stop, go, and turn. A good engine just helps you go. A shitbox engine is fine as long as you have good tires. A big V8 won't matter if you're running on pizza cutters.

Eat a well rounded diet with [preferably whole] grains, fruit, vegetables, meat/fish, and dairy (if you're white). The best fats are monounsaturated (like olive oil).
Animal fat ~= saturated fat and it is highly correlated with increased LDL cholesterol. Anecdotally, decreasing my red meat consumption (replacing most of it with chicken and fish) and replacing my whole fat dairy with reduced fat/skim reduced my LDL from 141 to 84

    Most important things in order:
    >total # of calories
    >total amount of protein
    >dietary fiber and micro-nutrients
    >antioxidants, etc. [found in fruits/vegetables]
