Except for the Chinese restaurants, which conveniently source their ingredients from the local pet shop.

Is this a flyover thing? I’ve worked in a number of restaurants and never ran into the so called sysco slop

I think it's more of a thing at shitty chain restaurants like Applebee's and the like. So yeah, the people you replied to think that every restaurant is either an Applebee's or an Olive Garden because they're probably flyovers or just poor. It's the same reason so many people here think they're better cooks than someone who's spent time doing it professionally; in their heads they imagine every line cook just microwaving bags of pre-made shit. It's pure delusion.

In middle school I knew a Chinese kid whose parents and uncle owned a Chinese restaurant and he told me that all of the Chinese restaurants in the country get their supplies from one company. He would never state the name of this company though, and would only refer to them as "the company."

Sysco has tons of pre-made food that shitty resturaunts buy, but they also sell whole ingredients like produce and meat. So it's really up to the restaurant to choose what they're buying.

      Anonymous

Yeah the vast majority of stuff ordered for restaurants is whole ingredients like giant bags of flour, boxes of eggs, and cases of chicken breasts. I was in the industry for awhile and worked at a bunch of different places(I managed the bar side but we would have to order some stuff with the kitchen like fruit) and the only premade stuff that came in were things like big containers of Frank's buffalo sauce and some frozen cheesecakes for deserts.
Sysco is just a distributor, you can order just about anything through them.

these fricking trucks dumbfound me, i always think my tiny lil car is already too big for certain maneuvers and lanes and stuff but these motherfrickers just drive right thru em. Also I have never seen a "bad" truck driver? Like how is every motherfricker that drives a semi always a god damn drving pro?

Requires a license that you cant get without some practice. Also they are driving the trucks for hours on end so obviously they will be more skilled then most at driving their specific vehicle.

They're all about the same. That's what the average population wants, the same thing. Choice is an illusion. If something brings you joy get it, otherwise get the cheapest or move on

I've only had two jobs where I did the ordering, but in my experience Sysco definitely prioritized larger clients, and was kind of shitty with customer service if you were a smaller, more from-scratch type kitchen like where I worked, so I typically used US Foods. As far as quality they weren't that different. Some things were cheaper at one place or the other, but I never really noticed much difference in the products themselves. It's also really dependent on your location, and having a good regional manager and delivery driver.

They're all about the same. That's what the average population wants, the same thing. Choice is an illusion. If something brings you joy get it, otherwise get the cheapest or move on

      >that's what the average population wants, the same thing
What the frick are you even talking about? If I'm ordering russet potatoes or yellow onions I want to get the thing I ordered - consistently. Most restaurants use these big distributors for all their basic shit, and then go through specialty distributors for more specialty items.

Working for this company must suck so much butthole. Imagine driving these trucks having to back up in cramped back lots of bumfrick nowhere restaurants. Or loading the trailers working in a building sized refrigerator all day.

The drivers aren't the ones loading the trucks, and they typically have a pretty set route, so once they know where they're going it's not that big of an issue. The thing about driving a truck is that people just kind of let you park wherever because that's what the job is.

You've got it way backwards. Driving for Sysco is a highly desired job in the trucking industry.
Once the drivers get some experience the backing into the lots is nothing to them.
