    RTFM.

But it’s almost always a negative number on the dial.

    >turn dial all the way to one side
    >touch the freezer inside
    >is it hot?
    >if yes turn it to the other side
    No need to thank me.

The higher number. It obviously doesn't correspond to the actual temperature, so you're not "turning up the temperature". Think of it like turning up the A/C in your car, or just putting a fan on a higher setting.

Try posting a picture of the dial so maybe we could have a chance of answering your question. Or even better, post the make and model of your fridge so we can google the manual for it and tell you the answer. Or do that yourself, you lazy frick.

in my experience, big number = more cold
but you can try just turning the dial one way or the other, and listen for it turning on or off

if my freezer's not cold enough I buy some ice at the store and put it in there. what else are you supposed to do? freezers are for ice.

You buy ice in order to keep your ice cold? If you use ice at all why wouldn't you already be making ice in your freezer?

freezer isn't cold enough to make ice

Then why don't you make more ice using the ice you've bought?

it melts too fast because its not cold enough in the freezer. thats why im buying the ice to put in there.

Why don't you buy more ice to make it even colder then?

i do. i pick up a bag on the way home from work every day.

Why don't you pick up two bags so that one keeps the other from melting? Then you can do it again the next day and you'll have two bags of unmelted ice. When you have enough ice to lower the temperature enough you can then make your own ice.

if i get that much ice i won't have any room for my stuff. i have enough room for one bag of ice and two tubs of ice cream.

You stop to pick up a bag of ice on the way home from work everyday, but can't just buy a single tub of ice cream at a time?

                ice is cheaper.

Then why don't you buy two bags of ice and one tub of ice cream, instead of the other way around?

i can either fit two bags of ice and no ice cream, or one bag of ice and 2 ice cream. i could do one and a half bags of ice and one ice cream, but i really like having two different flavors i can choose from. i would really dislike only having one flavor available at a time just so i have to get ice less often.

could you buy colder ice? maybe ask your ice grocer to salt it for you. I'm sure he'd be happy to oblige a regular customer

                salt melts ice

but it would allow your local artisan ice maker to provide lower temperature ice

This. Higher number = more colding power. It's a refrigerator strength setting, not temp.

Units are important. If there is a DEGREE symbol next to the number, then lower is colder. Otherwise it's higher number == more cooling intensity.

in my last barracks the dial didn't even have numbers, it was a gradient from blue to white, never did figure out which was more cold
