Half a whole garlic. If it calls for half a whole garlic I use a whole garlic. Garlic is tasty. Garlic is good for you. I don't have anyone in my life I need to smell nice for so it's fine to smell like garlic all the time.

      >I don't have anyone in my life I need to smell nice for so it's fine to smell like garlic all the time.
I've been cooking with whole cloves of garlic and then when they're soft I'll smash them up and add it back into whatever I made. You get all the garlic flavor this way without that pungency that gets in your skin and on your breath. Chopping it up when it's raw is what does that. Works with onions too.

anywhere from 4 or 5 cloves to the whole head depending on the size of the dish and what its flavor profile will be. most of the time i'll use the whole head for a stew or something like stir fry, curry, tomato sauce that is more heavily spiced. i am greek so it's hard for me not to use way too much garlic. it's in my blood

one time the food bank gave me a 5lb bag of raw peeled garlic and i processed it into toum (lebanese garlic spread). i made a tomato sauce that had so much garlic in it, it was orange instead of red. anyway after processing it for a few hours i went to my local dive bar for a beer and a burger and someone at the other end of the bar went "WHO THE FRICK SMELLS LIKE GARLIC"
and in that moment i knew my greek ancestors were smiling down on me.

a "clove" of garlic refers both to the little wedges and to the head as a whole.
many amateur vampires have made the deadly mistake of confusing them.
