      >blows my fricking mind people dont just go to their local deli
because many people in the US don't have these things anon. their downtown contains a 2 mile strip mall of national chains and that's it

      >local deli or cornerstore

most people don't live in NYC and the pandemic bankrupted like half of all small businesses. The ones that are left usually aren't going to be local to where you live or where you work, you have to drive there intentionally

I haven't been to Subway in years, but isn't their bread kind of just uniformly soft? That was always my problem with them. There's no contrast in textures to almost anything. You can customize your sandwich however you want, but it's always kind of just a log of mush, and honestly doesn't really taste very different no matter what you choose.

Yep, I don't understand why it's popular. Maybe because people think it's healthy, for some reason. I'd sooner go to McDonald's.

Are they even popular? They're everywhere because they have a really predatory franchise model that borders on being a pyramid scheme, but any time I go past one it never seems busy.

Technically it's not bread, it's cake.

is it full of preservatives to keep it "fresh" for the customer

It's not the preservatives that make it cake, it's all the sugar.

The sugar is consumed during fermentation

the heat of the sugar cooks the bread

It doesn't have preservatives it's made on-site daily, it has dough conditioners, not preservatives

I ate at allantico vinaio today. Mortadella with Stracciatella, pistachio spread, and chopped pistachios on schacciata bread. Delicious.
You ate at subway?? Wow, that’s so ironic.
