genus ribes is apparently at least partially illegal in the US because the plants can carry a disease which threatens those big trees they like so much.
I grow gooseberries at home, in Denmark. They're underrated.

I eat these whenever I find them in the forest

You can buy black currant jam easily, red is harder to find thought, at least for me

Haven't had a fresh one in years. They're simply not available now that I live in Ameriland.
I can find them frozen at some stores. The missus uses the red ones at Christmas. And as the jam is everywhere these days.

        >disease which threatens those big trees they like so much.
with in 35 years time the chestnut blight killed 3.5 billions giant chestnut trees which was one of the largest ecological and economical disasters this country has ever dealt with.

We had wild boar that fed only on chestnuts that tasted better the Iberico ham, one tree could build a entire village and the wood didn't rot or get eaten by termites making it one of the largest exports all through the Appalachians and the key source of income and it was all wiped out by 1940 from some Chinese virus.

So yea we're a little touchy about our trees

yeah, but was there really enough acreage for 3.5 billion to have died? not only that, were there really that many trees back then? sounds like some more israeli mind trickery to me

It's an alternate host for pine blister rust.
Fat lot of good it did to ban them. I've seen redcurrents and gooseberries growing wild all over the place. There's some of the latter on the back of my property line. Native blackcurrents I've only seen out in the swamp. I'd like to find some again and propagate them.

My street's hedges are made from blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes. It causes some disputes but it's well worth it for that sweet tartness

Depends where you live and how far away those trees are. State might come and spray chemicals into your pushes to kill them
