Twinings Earl Grey

Has anyone purchased pic related lately? I bought a box the other day and it was near undrinkable. I've been drinking Twinings Earl Grey for years and I love it, but either the box is bad or they changed their formula. It went from tasting somewhat citrusy to tasting like flowers and perfume. It's gross.
Any other Anons find this? Should I change brands, or did I just get a bad batch?

Different bag. Where are you, may I ask? Canada?

Canada indeed. The bags have always looked like that here. Earl Grey is my favorite, Twinnings has never been great but is a decent daily go to. Stash Double Bergamot is my favorite.

          >Stash Double Bergamot
          I'll look for that, thanks.

Why does it say "flavoured black tea"?
Also the bag colour is wrong.
I think this is maybe 'fake' American tea, the tea shouldn't be flavoured, the flavour comes from the leaves used.
Maybe they flavour regular black tea with an approximation of Earl Gray flavour, then sell it to Americans who will only be using their microwave to make it anyway!?

Earl Grey is flavored with bergamot oil. The bags looked like that before the flavor change. You sound like a moron.

You may or may not like it, it has a very strong bergamot taste which some think is too much, but I love it.

It's likely just local labeling laws. Because bergamot oil is a flavour, it has to be labeled as a flavoured tea.

You're better off with quality loose tea and an intergalactic cheeseburger maker like picrel. There are plenty of places online with good tea for reasonable prices.

I worked in a restaurant for months before I learned that these are for tea.
We used them to "dust" the food with decorative and delicious spices and powdered herbs.

They're easier to use and clean than you think. French presses are good for big batches of tea, you can use them for tea just like coffee

I've always been fine with their English Breakfast, but ended up pitching the box of Earl Grey I purchased because it tasted synthetic -- almost plastic. Bigelow and Ahmad both have fine Earl Grey, so I stick with them.

It just so happens that I ran out of tea yesterday so will add those two to my shopping list. I've seen Bigelow but not Ahmed.

Weird. I have the opposite impression of Bigelow and Twinings. Bigelow's bergamot flavor is so overpowering that it feels forced.

Why did they steal the Synders pretzels bag motiff for tea?

      Theft.

The tea is made of pretzels.

The heat from the pretzels brews the tea.

What was wrong with it? Was it too heavily dosed with Bergamot? While I haven't bought Twinings in a few years, I used to frequently get both the Earl Grey and English Breakfast and thought both were decent. Much better than the Wal-Mart brand one, Bigelow or whatever that had a very synthetic taste to it. If Twinings has gone bad I will have to find a new brand for Earl Grey.

Exactly what I said, it tasted like flowers. Like potpourri, or perfume. Normally it just tastes like citrus.

      Also too poor.

I wonder if they use a synthetic bergamot oil and just over-sprayed that or messed up the batch a bit. Kind of like how cinnamon tastes and smells like cinnamon but if you put too much of it in a dish then you taste or notice the spice. Maybe it is the same thing with whatever bergamot juice they were using.

Ingredients say "natural flavors and bergamot peel". I would be inclined to agree with you except I've never noticed the flowery component of this tea before. It doesn't feel so much like an over-spray as much as maybe they sprayed the wrong thing. But then what tea would taste like a bag of potpourri?

I don't know. A lot of companies are dealing with inflation by doing 'shrinkflation' where they either lower the amount in a container, or alter the recipe to be cheaper. I've heard some butter brands have increased moisture content in their butter to save money. Maybe Twinings is trying a new formulation for it's Bergamot flavor and it was off.

I heard in England they call it TWYnings, is that right?

      Anonymous

No they actually call it Baseball. Everything in England is referred to using their wienerney rhyming scheme. Twinings rhymes with innings and innings are divisions of a game in a game of Baseball. So if a British person were asking their friend for a serving of Twinings Earl Grey tea, they might say something like, "Hey Bruv can I getta cuppa dat Grey Baseball?"
