I think it's a holdover from days when sanitation was not as good as it is now. Vinegar kills bacteria, so marinating some questionable meat or vegetables could prevent you from getting sick.

I still use it for washing fruit and vegetables, as well as general house cleaning.

      >Vinegar kills bacteria, so marinating some questionable meat or vegetables could prevent you from getting sick.
Cooking kills bacteria too but people still put vinegar on cooked food.

I wonder if it could have something to do with stomach acidity? Maybe people who have lower stomach acid prefer more acidic food?

I liked the apple cider vinegar.
Drinking it undiluted was pretty harsh though. I wish I tried it with sparkling water.

it doesn't work, the best method is to take a deep breath and fill your lungs, exhale it all completely and hold your breath for 30 seconds, then take sharp short breaths through your nose for the next minute without exhaling

you're trying to reset your breathing nervous system because you're having spasms in your diaphragm

Isn't vinegar the most healthy condiment that actually does anything?
Not counting bullshit weeds that don't do much.
You're better off using vinegar than salt, mayo, ketchup, cream, etc.

Straight vinegar is fricking gross, but a lot of things are gross on their own. I wouldn't eat a spoonfull of salt either, but I sure as hell put it in my food. That said, I understand your pain. Every once in a while, some moron will come along who doesn't get that vinegar is supposed to be -part- of a flavor profile, and just dumps vinegar onto shit like pickles or fries or whatever. It's nasty as hell and ruins the food for me.

Although, my wife is one of those people who will just straight up drink vinegar plain. I don't get it. Apparently the Romans would do something similar, and vinegar was a common addition to sweet drinks in the summertime. I'm willing to believe it's just a difference in tastebuds, sort of like how Cilantro tastes like soap to some people.

      >drink vinegar plain
Does she actually enjoy it? A lot of people drink straight vinegar because they think it has health benefits even though they hate it. Otherwise it's not too different from adding a bit of lemon to your water.

      >I'm willing to believe it's just a difference in tastebuds
Probably. I like my food to have a lot more fat and the acidity pairs nicely.

        >Does she actually enjoy it?
She loves it, craves it even. If we're out of vinegar and I'm out I always get a text to buy more. She doesn't drink it every day, but we always keep some in the house. Doesn't even matter what kind either, she'll drink extremely mature vinegars, balsamics, rice vinegar, anything. It's really weird.

On the bright side we've always got lots of vinegars on hand, so if I want to whip up a salad or make an oil for sandwiches I'm spoiled for choice.

Vinegar only ruins food if you're an absolute sub-monkey moron. A small amount adds a little brightness to the dish it's put in.

sugar takes the edge off vinegars acidity completely, I recently started to add sugar to my salad dressing. I now look forward to drink the leftover dressing, I hated that as a kid but now I know all it was missing was sugar which my paranoid mom NEVER used for ANYTHING

adding to that, I now understand how romans could drink it. dilute apple vinegar 1:10 in sparkling water and add sugar and its gonna be a really refreshing drink

but rice vinegar smells like feet no way around it
