Tequila. Just takes like shit, I don't have any of the classic "got drunk on tequila in college and can't drink it since", I hated it the first time I had it and have every time I've tried it since. Mescal too. Everything else is mostly fine to me, rum is a bit too sweet but I can drink it if I have to.

have you only had blanco tequila? because if so I'd recommend trying a reposado or anejo, maybe you'll enjoy those more. otherwise, different strokes, so i respect that, but i love tequila and especially mezcal, blancos aa well

Honestly don't know, tequila is in short supply here in Norway and I've only had three or four different kinds, always at other people's houses.

i could be wrong but I'd bet you've only had relatively cheap tequila then that wasn't made with 100% agave. the type that people use to do shots with lime and salt just to get smashed. citrus and salt on the side is traditional but not the way it's usually done. most affordable tequila you can buy at the liquor section in a supermarket is putrid, and I'd assume that's where your friends got theirs.
if they were colorless they weren't anejo or reposado. if you're ever at a bar, maybe try a reposado, if after that you're still not a fan then it's just not your thing, which is definitely understandable

I don't drink vodka, usually. It's not bad, but it just doesn't seem to have any real flavor and the wienertails where I've had it either taste better with a different spirit or with no spirit, at all (e.g. I'd rather drink a virgin Bloody Mary or replace the vodka with a peppery reposado than use vodka). I'm surrounded by a lot of Poles, Lithuanians, and other Eastern Europeans, so I WANT to like it. Am I missing something? Honest question.
Also, in Chicago bars, everyone is crazy about Malort. It's a meme drink, but it's a Chicago company and has become a common thing. It's just not good, though, and it seems like a waste of money.

Honestly don't know, tequila is in short supply here in Norway and I've only had three or four different kinds, always at other people's houses.

      this, FRICK TEQUILA

I don't know about Norway, but most of your standard bars in the U.S. (not your wienertail bars; your run-of-the-mill bars that are in every town) just keep cheap tequila on hand for shots. It wasn't until I started going to nicer places or specifically wienertail-oriented bars that I became aware of the diversity in tequila. If I was stuck with just the three big brands' blanco tequilas, I'd have the same opinion as you.

Sambuca, because I hate the taste of licorice.

Have you ever had Ouzo? It's like Sambuca, but not as sweet. Avoid it.

Mezcal. Just tastes like smoke and grain liquor. It's a real good ingredient in meaty dishes like chili, but I'd say it's somewhere between a cooking extract and liquid smoke.

Rum is the only spirit I seem to dislike entirely.
I’ve tried cheap rum, expensive rum, had it neat and multiple mixed drinks, and not once have I ever really enjoyed it.
Which I guess makes me weird since rum seems to be regarded as one of the more approachable spirits.

      Anonymous

Have you tried white rum? Like white tequila, it's just a neutral spirit. Except from sugar cane, as opposed to agave. Spiced rum is a real crapshoot of what it'll taste like, kind of like gin.

        Anonymous

Still not a huge fan. Rum just isn’t for me.
Beyond that, I’ve never met a spirit I’ve disliked as an entire category.
I’ve yet to try a good baijiu, but I haven’t tried many.

Vodka = Can't go wrong, it's just ethanol and water

Gin = Juniper and other herbal spiced Vodka. Can be had neat, basis of most wienertails

Tequila = very versatile, peppery spirit. Can be barreled for more oak taste.

Rum = Almost too spicy, molasses tasting. Most forms are better mixed than tasted neat. Barbados makes the only form which I can drink straight.

Bourbon = Sweet, mellow. Can be complex, can be very "smooth". Better unmixed.

Scotch = Haven't tried enough to judge.

Mezcal = Smoky tequila. Haven't had enough to judge.

    Other forms of alcohol:

Beer = I prefer the regular lager over the IPAs. Even the hazy IPA seems like a super chilled out West Coast IPA -- a very grapefruit lager. The deeper porters and stouts can be amazing, but it's not as popular in the US.

Hard Seltzers = Basically beer with the beer/grain flavors removed and replaced with stevia and some sort of fruit flavor. It's crushable, and meant to coverup the taste of alcohol

White wine = light, buttery, great with fish, salads

Red wine = deep, usually for heavy meals

This is going to sound very snobby or maybe reveal a sort of placebo thing. Most, but not all cheap booze is pretty disgusting. I love pretty much every spirit including tougher ones like baiju, but it needs to be great quality.

Cheap as in low quality inexpensive. There are loads of exceptions to cheap = low quality. Bourbon is a great example. Plenty of inexpensive bourbons that punch far above their weight.

Liqueurs are best when self-made as you can control the sugar easily.
      My usual batch is.
      >750ml vodka, even cheap stuff like Smirnoffs taste gets covered up if you let the batch sit around long enough
      >1kg worth of berries or fruits or whatever
      >sugar to taste, I usually put around 150g
      >crush, peel, dice etc. the fruits and berries
      >put all in big glass jar, cover with saran wrap, put the lid on
      >forget it into some kitchen cupboard for two months or so
      >separate the liquid and filter if you want
      >put in bottles and drink or forget in some cupboard for few more months to further smooth out the taste

it doesn't work. the end result only takes on the taste of the fruit, not the sweetness. if you add sugar is just gets sticky instead of smooth like a proper liqueur

    rum

I just physically can't drink it, my body wretches at the smell and even looking at it I feel ill and putrid. I used to be an actual alcoholic and I distinctly remember being in hangover/withdrawal and there was only my parents rum bottle, and I just literally couldn't do it. I tried to open the bottle and hold my nose just to swallow some to deal with the withdrawal, at least a bit, but my body violently rejected it and I collapsed onto my knees dry heaving and vomiting up this weird acidic foam. I didn't even get any in my mouth, it was just the smell. It's just so fricking VILE. Always hated it, always will. Even cut with coke (the drink) or something strong, the RUM flavour just gets into my nose and mouth and makes me want to CHUNDER and PUKE and HURL.

God just fricking thinking about RUM makes me want to upchuck my fricking lungs. So fricking disgusting. The only rum I ever managed to drink succssfully was barcadi 151 but that's only because that shit is fricking rocketfuel and you could probably run a car on it, it has so much ethanol in it it drowns out the VILE RUM flavour but mostly the SMELL.

I'd literally rather smell human shit that rum. It would be a welcome relief.

I really really hate to be that guy, but whiskey/ bourbon. I have tried 9 different brands/types and I still can barely get it down without feeling nauseous. I think it has something to do with the tannins from the barrels. I can drink gin, tequila, vodka, rum, even raw homemade moonshine no problem, but I can't do whiskey/bourbon.
