I remember reading that Trader Joes target areas with people that are overeducated and underpaid. That's pretty much their gimmick: target single people or DINKs at the beginning of their careers that feel like they don't have enough time to cook elaborate meals but still want food that's trendy and varied.

      >what's the gimmick
lots of single people frozen meals, generally good prices on everything but their ready to eat fresh prepared food packs. Expect the chicken salad tub to be like $7, but th Their produce is high as well.

      >I remember reading that Trader Joes target areas with people that are overeducated and underpaid.
it's very high per capita income areas, actually. Think Naples, FL or Pinecrest FL or northern Virginia tech corrider. Because of lots of social media buzz, they'll also be in private university areas as well, places parents are footing the bill for the apartments since student housing is as unaffordable to students without mom and dad also buying a condo for 4 years instead. Underpaid? no. Intern in a courthouse or law firm, maybe. Most areas you see a TJs are places people would dine out nightly, and far more often than make a damn thing at home. Their wines, nuts snacks, crackers are just pantry items to hold until the next time you have to eat in.

this store caters to single young urban professionals.

products and produce packaged/sold in smaller quantities, and priced individually, at a markup.

high quality convenience items, easy to cook/frozen.
"natural/organic" and unique variety food items, at least they give off the brand image.
store branding using this natural/organic brand image, to justify marked up price.

loss leaders (wine) amongst marked up premium items (cheese, cereal).

      Anonymous

this is the most accurate as is

Good produce, nice specific goods (like their cheese and nuts sections). Some working professionals without much time like their fresh ready-to-eat or frozen meals. I hear their coffee is alright too, though I haven't had it. It's just a generally upper-quality chain, but not absolutely autistic and megapriced like Whole Foods.

i like their red and yellow curry sauces. they have really nice staples for someone who likes to cook but doesnt have a lot of time energy or space, including:
      -bags of frozen chicken breast
      -bagged salads
-stir fry vegetables or pre-shucked corn that can go in the microwave
      -frozen salmon bags
      -cheap eggs, butter, milk
      -skyr
-good spice mixes (the elote is really bomb on roast veggies)
and thats just the stuff i buy, though as a former fatty it's hard to pass by all the aisles of cookies, chocolate, sweets, snacks, chips etc. there is an overabundance of easy high calorie snack food which is a nightmare for me. plus you have to check the frozen food cause it can be marked as 500 calories but then the service size is 1/4 a "bowl" or whatever. the frozen tikka masala and butter chicken are really good though. the frozen naan and fry breads are calorie sinks too.

Yeah I mostly go there to get the curry sauce or frozen stuff once in a while. They have much better frozen stuff than most grocery stores, and in general aren't that expensive. Mixed luck on produce and meat, I usually go other places for those.

NTA but I also work there. If you're going to work retail, get a job there. It's easy as frick. People stay there forever because of how secure it is, the pay is good for the amount of responsibility you have, in my state the wage capped at $25/hr. There's a schedule/log at the front desk. everyone's shift is divided into one hour blocks, and it typically alternates being on the register or working stock. Only problem is you're expected to be an outgoing employee for customers so if you have the 'tism it's not gonna work.

There is shockingly little “organic” food there if you look. Most of it is just normal produce(that spoils faster than what you get at any other supermarket) and junk food with fancy packaging.

In these threads it's always pretty obvious who has shopped at TJ's and who hasn't.

Yes, Trader Joe's has low prices because it's owned by the same company as ALDI. They use the same business tactics as ALDI, but have a nicer façade so yuppies like it more.

If you have an ALDI near you, there's not much point in shopping at trader joe's.

Aldi is two different businesses, in Europe. They are brothers, as I recall. Instead of competing head to head in markets, they've agreed to avoid each other. The US Aldi is not the same Aldi that bought Trader Joes.

The businesses do have a lot in common, though. They push their own brands, limit floor space by limiting inventory, focus on high traffic stores.

US Aldi specializes in lower cost, TJ's specializes in appealing to shoppers that want trendy items and the ambiance. In both cases, some of their in-house brands are good, and some are really meh. Regular shoppers at each tend to look for specific items and fill in other groceries elsewhere.

I like both, but I like grocery stores in general. They fill different niches.

Looked into this, was a surprising and interesting arrangement. Did start as an American company, but was sold over to the Albrechts (and still co-managed for a decade or so). So, it's an American chain owned and operated by Germans at the top. Funny how I never took to mind their low SKU arrangement with how many times I've gone to both TJ and AlDi's. I suppose this sort of thing is kept very quiet because the Albrechts are such recluses.

Most of this type of stuff is kept low key. Callebaut (Belgian chocolate) was taken over by Barry (Swiss) but they keep calling it a Belgian chocolate and keep their (Callebaut) HQ in Belgium, solely for marketing purposes. None of their chocolate is obviously grown in Belgium (or Switzerland).

Same goes for AB Inbev, Belgium's (and the world's) biggest beer company: still located in Belgium but run by a Brazilian and the AB stands for Anheuser-Busch, "America's best-loved brewery", which is ridiculous.

I will say something nobody has mentioned is that they tend to have better produce than something like walmart for a reasonable price. on par with something like fred meyer but cheaper. but you have to pick and choose, some stuff is just overpriced for what it is. that same logic extends to a lot of their dried/canned goods as far as I can tell

      what are you buying?

because trader joes is the place with generally cheaper essentials like milk/egg/flour/bacon (surprisingly)/jam
      s/coffee/tea etc.

shoprite/stop&shop/c-town are generally more expensive in my area. they're also frequented by basketball americans and usually are in places in easy access of public transportation. i go to a couple of tradee joes locations depending on if i'm at home/office/city. the one 15 from home and near my work has mostly israeli shoppers which surprised me. not sure if that's good or bad.

produce used to be good around 2017, now it all spoils in a couple of days or so. it's not the worst since i shop every 3-7 days to re-stock cliff bars, lettuce, cheese and bread. i mostly stay away from frozen/prepared foods otherwose. but i used to buy like 5 pizzas and eat with salad. wasnt the worst but also didnt satisfy as good as my local pizzeria.

    >gimmick
They give their target customers what they want.
As a result, they have far more loyal customers than any other grocery chain. A TJ customer will drive past 10 other grocery stores just to go to TJ.
Hell, when my city was in coof-mode, stores had occupancy limits.
Within just a few miles there’s 2 Kroger, 2 Publix, a super target, Whole Foods, and a couple others.
You could literally walk right into any of these places.
TJ always had a fricking line of people outside waiting to get in, despite it being hot as frick. And I’m sure the people waiting in the miserable heat/humidity were made to feel special because they were being given free bottled water.
So yeah, it isn’t a matter of gimmick. It’s a matter of knowing your customer base.

If you’re actually interested, do some googling.
There’s a ton of millennial-psychology that went into play, and was even involved in studies. One thing being floor-freezers instead of door-freezers.
Apparently millennials feel pressured to buy something if they open a freezer door. But if they can just pick it up,‘they’re more likely to examine a product they haven’t tried.
    Things like that.

I think they were also one of the first stores to open up with strict well organized distancing protocols during the coof. Poorgay grocers can’t afford to rope off areas and have staff timing peoples shopping and it was mostly business as usual at those stores since they were “essential businesses” that couldn’t be closed down anyways.
So if you were hyper paranoid about the coof it seemed like the only place that was taking things seriously enough to actually mitigate your risk. Of course it’s east to just get groceries delivered if you’re that paranoid but people also wanted an excuse to leave the house so they “needed” to go get groceries 5 times a week since it was the only sanctioned activity until the St. Floyd Riots.

Produce is pretty good, organic chicken, eggs and wild-caught salmon and sausages are reasonably priced, beef is usually more expensive than other places. Good bacon but not necessarily cheap. Lots of nice food that seems to be cheaper and tastier than it would be at Vons, like feta cheese, artichokes, olives, hard cheeses, etc. Most of their jarred goods are jarred in olive oil instead of seed oil which is good. The food I buy from there seems simpler than other places, like there are less ingredients, especially weird chemical ones.

Alcohol selection is pretty good, none of the house brands are amazing in my experience but not bad for the price.

Customer service is always great and the store layout is pretty well organised. Cute girls usually work there.

And finally and most importantly, I rarely see non-whites in TJs despite living in a 50% mexican area. That alone makes it worth it.

I like their frozen Indian food, kimchi, and greek yogurt. Plus they have neat snacks like those Israeli peanut puff things. And for the most part its cheaper than my local grocery stores with all of the same meat and produce so there's practically no reason for me not to frequent it for most of my needs. I still go to Costco for some things though like peanut butter, prescription medications (they stock better generic brands than other pharmacies and if my insurance isn't paying its still ridiculously cheap compared to CVS and those sorts of places), some supplements, toilet paper, etc. Oh, and the occasional hotdog always brings a smile to my face

It's great for specific things. Missing a lot of items you can find at supermarkets, but the things they do have are generally high quality and a good price. I usually go there then go to Ralph's on the way back for stuff they didn't have. The employees are also very friendly and professional.

Their green tea ice cream has a surprisingly short list of simple, natural ingredients. The popular brands at asian markets near me and the stuff you'd find at a regular grocery store like Häagen-Dazs are full of preservatives and whatever else. You can't say the same about a lot of other things at TJ, but their green tea ice cream is definitely commendable

add the breakfast sandwiches to the list of things not to buy. i paid for 2, they were made from turkey, didn't have anything but turkey and egg and bread, and cost 4 times the prices of just buying the higher quality breakfast sandwiches at any other location.

but the cookie butter is really good. also the chocolate trailmix. and the peanut granola.

Chocolate batons are my go to, I like getting ginger beer from them(and especially the triple brew that they sell only in the winter), fig jam and lemon curd are great, chocolate covered peanut butter pretzels, the classic joejoes, and also in the winter they've got these huge toffee tins

The store makes me cringe whenever my gf brings me. Everything feels so beyond "extra" that it annoys me. They can't just have chocolate covered pretzels, they need to have extra dark german chocolate nut butter covered sea salt pretzels. All of their items are super specialized and "quirky" like it was made for zoomer women. I fricking hate it. Their prices are good, but their selection is fricked. They don't even have soft drinks except for Ginger Beer, for example. What the frick? It's a store designed for women. Also my store in particular is filled with troony workers (I live in Chicago) and they even have fricking downies bag your groceries and they try to make awkward as frick conversation with you while not giving you direct eye contact and it just feels super fricking weird. Almost like they are the store slaves that they parade around to appear progressive. Frick I hate it so much it makes my skin crawl.

I like some of their candy though.

    They have some things they excel at and some things they are poor at just like every other store. A lot of their brand stuff is pretty good. Just off the top of my head I like them for;

    Cheaper Organic Coffee
    Rice Crackers
    Italian Sausage
    Chocolate
    Cheese Selection
    Organic bagged greens
    Precut organic broccoli
    Apples
    Lamb
Gluten free everything, especially tortillas and bagels, english muffins all really good and reasonably priced
    Olive Oil
    Bottled Carbonated water

Bad part is the selection and their tea is not very good.

it has a lot of frozen food, snacks, and booze at competitive prices, but you don't have to purchase that.
They stock all the normal groceries you need, also at pretty decent prices (better than the other nationals like Safeway/Kroger)
The only catch is that their produce is clearly bought on the cheap because its about to go bad, so you better eat it right after you buy it.
