Submarines use high quality food to boost morale on long stints submerged.

You're huffing farts and sucking off gays in a sealed cylinder for weeks/months at a time though. The food is the least they could do.

My father had submariner friends so whenever he did reserve training in Washington he would hook up with his buddies and rest on the sub. He said the food was amazing. Then again, he lied about everything so that was probably bullshit too.

Which branch of the US Military has the best chow?

I've been at, lived on multiple bases.
Army had the worst chow. Navy bases were pretty mediocre and I couldn't get seconds. Air Force was good (of course) and marine mess hall was the best because I could get as many servings as I wanted and breakfast was dank. I was a fat frick in the military lol.

The first week after being restocked at sea was pretty good. This is coming from the view of a 20yo Marine in 1995 on the USS Comstock. The fresh buns were always really good, so even at the worst of times we had awesome freshly baked buns and peanut butter, and that's not bad!

bubblehead here. the food was great at the galley on base. at breakfast the cooks would make omelets to order which was nice. the food underway was also great for the first 3-4 weeks. milk and salads and stuff like that ran out quick. once a month at sea we would get lobster and steaks with french onion soup.

Yes, and on the other end of the spectrum, Marines supposedly eat crayons. But when it comes to memes, nobody seems to wonder about the Coast Guard. I wouldn't be surprised if they low-key ate the best (when on-shore, that is), in terms of the military "genpop" at least.

Otherwise, it seems reasonable to assume that legit Special Forces get to eat whatever they want when not deployed to help maintain peak performance, since they represent a considerable training investment, compared to the average 4'10" diversity captain whose most strenuous task is getting out of an office chair a few times a day.

In almost every branch of the military. The food in basic is like eating a bag of dicks, but once you graduate it is high quality on base in order to keep moral and spirits high. I didn't care much for the bland Mexican food day, but I ate from the mess three times a day almost every day without complaint. This was back in the 70s, and today may be very different, but that was my experience.

Navy submarine crews eat the best because food is their one and only luxury

      Anonymous

I used to work with a submariner and he said it kind of depends
They have to stock up in different parts of the world and it is what it is, they try to get the good stuff but beggars can't be choosers
He also told me they had sheet pan pizza every Friday because the lack of any real day/night cycle fricks with your head and it helps you keep track of time
One time their captain asked the cook to get him some brussel sprouts so he could have steak with sprouts every so often
What the cook heard was "Make fricking brussel sprouts for every God damn man on this boat every single night"
Turned the boat into a 24/7 hot box of farts
He was part of a group that got to watch movies on pizza night and every other week, twice a month, they watched "Down Periscope" until their XO had a fricking meltdown and if they watched that fricking movie one more time he'd have them all busted for insubordination
The captain let a month go by then told them they had a chat and they could go back to watching it, and carry on

    marine here
I've eaten several times at multiple bases and the marine corps typically had the best chow state side everywhere because the cooks are marines and they have to eat the same shit as everyone else And they are feeding officers and high ranking officials who randomly stop in for chow + eat as much as you want on saturday/sunday morning.
Air Force was great a little bland but alot more variety. I was there getting a surgery and the food wasn't bad a single time.
Navy food is pretty meh. Nobody gives a shit if the food is good and you can only eat once because everyone in the navy is a fatbody weakling (except seals and other combat roles obviously)
army food is shit because army people are shit. Lowest common denominator people making slop no offense to our nations heroes though.

Where and when? 1st MarDiv out of Los Flores, Camp Pendleton. Our chowhall was mid (at best) but Edson Range just down the road had THE BEST FRICKING FOOD in the Corp. We ate lunch every day because it was fire, and this little black cook girl was a genius with baking. My God her bakery was so good.

I miss eating that well, guys.
Every day, fresh buttery bread sticks, spagetti with meat sauce as a side and whatever magic she came up with, followed by one of her amazing deserts. I hope someone wifed that girl up good.

    >Which branch of the US Military has the best chow?

It's all zogchow, so none of it is great. Your meal experience depends on where you are and your rank. Out in the field you have MRE type shit, which is essentially canned food, candy, and drink mix powder that tastes a bit rank. If you have a FOB, you get canned food reheated. If on a ship, you get canned and frozen food reheated, and you have to hope it's not dog food. Officers get a little better food.

Stateside, it depends on the chow hall. It's all cafeteria/school tier shit. Best you can get is some fancy shit cooked at the white house or at an officer's event. I will admit there was a nice place on the base I worked at that had a good buffet for cheap (now gone due to COVID), but even Golden Corral beats it for taste.

Overall, regular restaurants will mog the crap you get at the chow hall. 100% of what I ate in a chow hall has been forgotten. The MREs and such stick with you memory-wise because you are eating them in the middle of nowhere in nature while starving, so they become "war stories".

probably air force or navy. I was army national guard and most units with cooks were bad and most DFACS were bad but there were some good ones. cooks were almost always lazy fat asvab washouts who complained about their mos (even though it does suck most of the time) but would put less then the bare minimum in. then when they got to do actually army shit like the range or convoys or whatever would b***h about that. active duty might be differently

I'll throw my 2 cent in for the Corps. I was stationed in a joint base Marine/Navy, Chow halls are ran by civilians but half of them had some sort of mental disability. 90% of the time its slop like beef stroganoff but worse than what you get get from a walmart frozen section. Anyone with half a brain in service will get comrats to get your money back and get your own food. I never skip breakfast at the chowhall though because they had some fella cooking up eggs fresh. 2 whole 5 whites onions, ham, bacon, mushroom and extra cheese with a side of soggy moron hashbrowns from the slop line for 3 bucks if i remember correctly.
