The local Chinese bakery has started putting gravy in the name because it's bad vegetable oil pastry and corn starch gravy predominately.

New Zealander here, spent enough time in Australia to understand that Australians are shit tier piemakers. They put no effort into it, its all just mass produced gravy in cardboard. England and New Zealand know how to make actual pies.

this is true. four'n twenty and other prepackaged pies are not very good, but any real bakery will make their own from scratch, and those are bloody delicious.

too much time, you and every other kiwi
we've got the same food standards, your industrial pies are every bit as crap as our own, and if you didn't find a good bakery while you were here that's on you

Its okay to make them at home. Outside of the midwest though meat and fish pies are super rare.

If you can make a beef stew or chili, you can make a meat pie.

The Aussie chain "Pie Face" tried to expand into America. But it failed, because it was featured on "Celebrity Apprentice" with Donald Trump. A few months after the Pie Face episode was filmed, Pie Face closed all it's NYC stores abruptly, except for one. If you watch the episode (season 7 episode 1) - you will understand why they gtfo.

Australian meat pies were a bit of a fad in NYC for a while. Dub Pies was another, they closed after the pandemic I guess

The whole thing about Australian meat pies is that they're supposed to be a cheap and convenient snack that you can buy on the run or while you're doing something else. I can just imagine that they probably tried to charge "New York" prices for these meat pies and that had a lot to do with the reason they failed.
Also, I've never been to a Pie Face here in Australia but I hear they're overpriced garbage so that probably didn't help. Most Australians usually buy their meat pies from legitimate bakeries, not those corporate chains that serve reheated garbage. If actual bakeries started serving them in the US, it might be more of a sustainable market.

Pie Face is shit, not sure why anyone would go there unless you were at a servo and desperate.
Any true Aussie knows to get a pie from the local bakery. Nothing like a fresh Steak and Kidney pie then a custard tart for sweets. That being said, if I'm getting a frozen pie it'll be Patties because the factory is in my home town
