The ones in straya aren't that great. I swear they used to be better. I remember one 24hr one in Glen Waverley (Melbourne) that was fricking amazing. They were a bit darker and you could taste hash browns and shit. I reckon it's cause they weren't changing the oil as often as they were supposed to.
KFC chips have always had the best chips in Australia in my opinion. The only thing is they've always been hit or miss; sometimes they're soggy, sometimes there's not enough salt, sometimes there's too much salt, sometimes they're perfect. But when they're perfect they're the best. That said, a shit KFC chip beats a good maccas chip any day of the week.
Back in the day they used beef tallow. Nothing on earth tasted better. It's sad they use sneed oil now.

Nowadays they fricking suck ass and are some of the WORST fries on the market, but because McDonald's spend so many decades with the best fries and putting so much money into commercials and promotions regarding their fries it's simply lingered in the public consciousness that McDonald's has the best fries, even when they're the worst. That's the power of marketing.

They actually did it because of the bullshit saturated fat scare of the 80s and 90s so they could claim their fries became "healthier" because they're now fried in sneed oil.
Because McDonalds fries are unique and nostalgic, since they soak them in sugar water and put them through a bunch of other processes. They have a very specific taste unlike regular French fries, they’re extremely consistent and are always exactly the same, as such they transcend what a French fry is and become a very specific product of their own that you can’t get anywhere else. It’s the same with McNuggets, they don’t taste like regular chicken nuggets, they have their own uniqueness about them that separates them from anything else. So it’s not that they’re better, again, they’re just unique and nostalgic and people form habits easily.

Popeye's fries are pretty mediocre and that's coming from someone who thinks their fried chicken is top tier.
Wendy's is only good when the staff remembers to actually season them. The employees at my local Wendy's forget to salt their fries more often than not.
I agree that McDonalds fries are overrated, though. Carl's Jr/Hardy's has the best fast food fries in my opinion. They actually have a decent amount of potato flavor instead of just tasting like grease.
