You gotta get all the factory teflon off it first. Try a drill and wire wheel.

Melt it down and recast it. That'll do the trick.

You have to season your dishwasher or it won’t work.

i know this is a bait, but i have a serious question based on it. The first time I got a cast iron it was from a thrift shop and I unthinkingly soaked it in soapy water overnight to get any remnants of the public's grubby paws off of it. However the next morning i noticed (obviously) it now had developed some patina of rust on it which would not come off when being scrubbed with a sponge. As such I have not used it yet. Is it doomed? How do i get the rust off?

You can completely strip a pan with bar keepers friend. Takes it down to bare metal with minimal effort, so a quick clean and then you can season it.

What the frick does seasoning it mean
Can I just use like a normal pan? I don't want to season it.

It's a nonstick coating of polymerized oil. You get the pan really hot, rub some oil on it, and the oil turns into a non-toxic non-carcinogenic non-stick coating that lets you cook things in it with minimal grease or oil and it won't stick. If you don't do it then you'll hate using the pan and call it a meme like some other posters in this thread.

What exactly is the black coating on these anyway? Is it just the oil? I scored a Lodge reversible grill/griddle out the trash the other day and it needs to be scoured and re-seasoned but the parts that are still fresh look abnormally shiny.

The heat from the dishwasher sanitizes the pan.

          they are kinda shit.
i live in such a moist area (coastal) that even perfect maintenance will not prevent rust on a cast iron. sucks, but stainless is what i use instead.
