This looks worse than survival food but since you mention Wisconsin, are the food chunks bathing in a pool of butter?

      Anonymous

probably, most places pour on the broth from the boil, a few others use clarified butter.

Boiling/braising fish in wine, cidre or fumet is quite common for delicate fishes. You can also make a sauce from the reduction afterwards.

never seen a fish boil near me, it's all fish fries or steak fries mostly in church basements. there's one town that's real big on chili cook-offs. elks lodges etc usually do pancake breakfasts. the most unique one was probably a very german church that did schnitzel and other german dishes for a fundraiser every year

fish boils sound gross. lenten fish fries are where it's at

Fish boils are pretty good. Not as good as fish fries, but I enjoy the occasional fish boil.

Fish boils, originating from Scandinavian immigrants, are typically whitefish boiled in a giant pot of water with salt, potatoes, onions, and sometimes carrots. The end result is basically a fish stew minus the broth. The fish and vegetables are then served with bread and coleslaw.

Fish boils are popular at church fundraisers and other large gatherings in the summer, especially in the Door County area.

that's what... 4-5 lbs of food on that plate, plus what looks like a ton of butter? and this is a vaguely healthy meal, just with enough food for 3 people. no wonder flyovers are all fricking hamplanets

this is good but needs a squeeze of lemon and aioli for dipping
I would toss the bread also and get more coleslaw or a nice mesclun salad
