No, we just have the best climate for growing things so we got to choose the best
Compare this to somewhere like Maine where you can hardly grow shit except lettuce so you were forced to catch and eat sea-bugs

Southern food still manages to be based despite the black people.

It was a blend of techniques and ingredients from different cultures. White people invented fried chicken and meat smoking, blacks added spice to the food. You can argue which was the more significant contribution.

It's all white people and native food, they taught slaves how to cook it, then by the time of the emancipation, more black people had the generational memory to produce it, and that's why it became known as black people food

the best closest answer. Very few things more African than American in the Southern repertoire, probably just rice.

There are two types of families in the keys: the ones descended from when it was an uninhabitable clump of mangrove swamp islands, and rich boomers who retired there from elsewhere. Lots of money, lots of greasy spoon breakfast joints. If you’re going to Key West though, its basically Miami without a beach.

We were literally the third state to secede after South Carolina and Mississippi, we're definitely the South, up in the Panhandle they literally have billboards reminding people not to frick their cousins

Florida crackers and the Panhandle are certainly Southern and Tallahassee is too, but everything else is a parody of Southernness. Florida is for people who saw that Atlanta wasn't that racist (it's classist, though) and though it was a bad thing.

The map is moronic. Kentucky and West Virginia aren't South. They're border states like Maryland and Delaware. And only salty Old Southerners want to exclude Texas.

          kentucky:
          >supported the south in the civil war despite being a northern/border state
          >has more cultural ties to the south than to any other region
          >is commonly grouped with the south otherwise
It's a southern state in the post-civil war reconceptualization of the south, whereas maryland and delaware, as examples, are more northern now.

With Florida the further south you go the more north you get

Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina. This is the south. Not negotiable.

Lumping together Louisiana with South Carolina is pretty dumb purely from a culinary point of view. There's the South and then there's Louisiana just sort of sitting there doing its own thing.

That's silly to say considering the two share more culinary tradition with eachother than either do with any state outside of that list. Gullah people and Lwizyan people have a very close history together that parallels eachother, the white folks that traveled between them spread similar ideas between that half of their culture, and both are well within the economic and cultural influences of major southern cultural centers, like El Paso, New Orleans (obviously), Atlanta, and Charleston (obviously). It would be very silly to drive a line between people that have always had a shared history.

I wouldn't include Virginia listed in that. Virginia is becoming much more Northern in culture, cuisine, and politics. I would no longer call it a Southern State, possibly in the very southern portion of Virginia, and the tail end, but once you start getting near Richmond and especially Northern VA, no. It's an interesting State, it's like the meeting of the North and South, but the North is prevailing here.

You’ll have to be more specific. There are some dishes that have origins in African and Caribbean roots. Then there’s plantation food that slaves turned the shit parts of animals and plants in to something edible like hogs feet and pickled watermelon rinds and chitlins. Then there’s the dishes they were taught to cook for plantation owners and slave masters which trickled down in to a shared southern cuisine. Until everything became “southern” style and it’s all a shared melting pot of fruits and vegetables with roots in the darkest parts of Americas history. But has become the backbone of American cuisine.
