Would you eat this?

It’s unopened and isn’t moldy. Not sure how it taste yet because I working up the nerve to try it.

      It smells like normal salsa.

Salsa? No, probably not. It's a good base for natural fermentation and/or a little botulism.

Opie, It's FINE. The military did extensive research on expiration dates of both foodstuffs AND medicines.
With the exception of certain anti-biotics, and some poorly executed retort pouches, 2 years isn't going to make much difference.
They have a vested interest as one of the largest mass buyers of both.
      SOmebody has the report...
      PLS poast.
Ciprofloxacin was the Antibiotic I believe--the ONLY one that didn't just become ~5% less effective, but TOXIC instead.
there are plenty of sealed cans of food from 1960s out there, that as long as the seal is good,(no rust or dents,) the worst that can habben is mushy paste that will STILL provide calories, even if the micro nutrients are shot.
      FOOD IS GOOD
      GOD IS GREAT.

jarred/canned products are the last thing on earth i'd eat after expiration.

Why? I didn't even know canned foods expired.

      Even if it looks normal?

        >looks
Botulism is a micro organism and the toxin it produces has no oder or taste. So yes. Even if it looks or smells normal.

if the food is contaminated with botulinum it would off gas like crazy, the top would be bulged (uwu). 2 year past the best by date for salsa is nothing if the seal is intact.

I’ll keep it for now. I was only considering eating it because there isn’t much food left and I had some chips. Gonna go with ramen for now.

homie I've eaten yogurts that were a year past the expiration and it was fine. Your salsa if full of salt, very acidic and the whole thing has been pasteurized it's totally fine to eat as long as the seal is intact.

Like I said, I’ll keep it. I’m being cautious because I don’t have a doctor anymore. If I did, I'd YOLO it.

No its too old just throw it out. Maybe a month or two past the expiration and it was being kept ice cold in the fridge but if you just kept it in the pantry toss it.

Yeah, it’s been at the back of a cabinet this entire time.

That's fine. It's a shelf stable product. It doesn't have to be kept cold. Even the USDA who is known for being overly cautious says canned food past expiration is fine as long as it wasn't opened or damaged.

                Same process.

If the lid pops it's fine. It might be a little extra mushy after 4 years but if the seal held it's not going to kill you.

                >If the lid pops it's fine.
                Basically this.

On the one hand, yeah sure, it's probably acidic enough. On the other, it's just salsa, it's not like you're wasting a ton of money throwing it out.

If the seal is intact and not bulged out, sure, it's probably super tasty after sitting for so long, all the flavors are melded together.

Canned and jarred food essentially lasts forever assuming the seal isn't broken. Expiration dates on them aren't for food safety reasons but quality, the texture and flavor might change but it's still perfectly safe.

best by tells you that it might be safe to eat, not just at peak condition

expiration dates are what you're supposed to be careful with

You should not, anyway if you tried and is like fizzing in your mouth means is good and you can eat it whole.

Yeah, that's what my grandmother used to tell me all the time.
If it's fizzing means it's good.

No. You can literally see the glass expanded because of bacteria gases. Do not eat that.

best by does not equal ruined by.
you have two tell tale signs.
    1. consistency. if it's normal consistency you're fine.
    2. mold on inside of lid. if there's no mold it's still safe.

Please don't eat this OP, you'll get botulism. If you can hear the gases inside of it fizzing when you open it, that means it's literally fermenting. Botulism can lead to paralysis or even death.

Has the glass expanded to the touch? It looks like it has but I can’t tell for sure from the pic.
