I seriously doubt the rich folk are eating cold onions on a thick slab of cheese for their tea

It's usually not that...country style, it's a couple kinds of cheddar, a couple kinds of onion, all finely chopped, sometimes mixed with butter or mayo (pretty uncommon) or thinly sliced cheese layered with super-thin quick pickled onion rings, but it's still basically cheese and onion on untoasted white bread
It's a satisfying combination the main reason it's done mini-style is because it's a lot of onion

While he's a bit chavvy I recall ricky gervais talking about how much he was enjoying a cheese and onion sandwich on the radio in 2003, I assumed it was a grilled cheese with onions, not this beast.

Admittedly, the French were probably involved with good British food at some point

With a hunk of cheese like that, it's gotta be like a $4 sandwich in ingredients alone. Not even accounting for the pub markup.

PLOUGHMANS LUNCHEON INNIT, BLOODY GOOD SCRAN

Yes, I was about to say isn't this a ploughman's lunch? What is the op looking for. Yes an onion and cheese sandwich isn't ideal, but German's do the same fricking thing with Lindberger, and that smells terrible. (tastes amazing though)

if I had no other ingredients and no heat source, sure, I'd be happy to. but I'd use a thinner slice of cheese, and if I had a way to heat it, I'd fry it up or toast it.

No because the presentation of it just seems wrong. I would have to add a slice of ham or chicken on the bottom of the cheese and put it in a panini style presser.

Nah, you need a little liverwurst or braunschweiger and some pungent mustard to even it out.
It's the oddest thing, once you put a bunch of over-the-top ingredients that you wouldn't eat on their own together, it's like the mouth gets overloaded with taste and it's just savory as frick.
Fat, stink, bitter (pumpernickel preferred), spice, raw onions. It's kind of like the Chinese cooking philosophy where they need sweet, spicy, savory, and spice to make a dish whole.

The only cheese I could maybe eat that much of without it being melted or something is mozarella, so if it's a nice mozarella I would. One of my favorite simple lunches as is to make myself is just a few slices of bread, 1/4th of a raw onion, and 1/3rd of a block of mozarella cheese. Eating it all on a bun instead of separately sounds fine.

I used to eat onion and cheese sandwiches quite a bit when I was younger after my grandfather showed them to me. I like a bit of mustard, but it's a surprisingly good sandwich cold. I also love a grilled cheese or grilled cheese with onion, but the two are really totally different.

Gran used to take me to the beach with a bag full of thick sliced bread, big old thick slices of cheese, white onion and lots of butter. Best sandwiches I've ever eaten. Tried to recreate it but I can't find the brand of cheddar she would use.
