Other than those two uses I stick with milk. Almond milk production is actually pretty terrible for the environment. Almonds are a very water-heavy crop and the process for creating almond milk produces a LOT of waste.

Real milk has tons of estrogen from the cows hopped up on the hormones that make them produce milk.

Coconut milk is the only thing that can arguably come close, and it's not overly processed, just make sure they aren't adding sugar to it, it has some natural sugar.

      >"One thing is clear. All milk alternatives are far better for the planet than dairy. A 2018 study by researchers at the University of Oxford showed that producing a glass of dairy milk results in almost three times more greenhouse gas emissions than any plant-based milk and it consumes nine times more land than any of the milk alternatives. (Land is required to pasture the cows and grow their feed, which the animals belch out in the form of methane.)"

As someone who actually lives in a country whose rainforest is being destroyed, let me tell you something pretty grim...

The soy that they are growing there is NOT used for cattle feed, but rather is meant to be broken down into isolated molecules to be used in the food industry to engineer new products with a larger shelf life and cheaper production cost.

The cattle here is nearly all grass fed, as we have wide pastures due to our colonial past, in which the vegetation was cut down completely in order to make room for plantations, that would supply the first world nations of Europe with sugar, coffee, oranges and cotton.

Everything they have told you about the situation here is a lie.

And above all, the main cause of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest is neither soy nor cattle pastures, but rather illegal exotic wood trafficking, which fetches obscene prices when turned into luxurious furniture for the super rich. Not to mention the ore mining performed by EU multinational companies, who pollute the water and soil, destroy the vegetation and fauna and profit billions of dollars every year, while they get away with a "eco friendly" propaganda that they are helping preserve the forest by donating a couple millions of dollars, which do not even begin to cover the cost of trying to repair the damage it has caused to the ecosystem and local native populations, who are being wiped out in violent armed conflicts financed by these multinational megacorps.

So, with that said, please be more selective of companies you support, just because they have a neat little logo saying they are friends of the rainforest, does not mean they really are.

              > The cattle here is nearly all grass fed
Grass fed is not the same as grass finished. Grass fed just means they graze when they are still immature. They then go to feedlots where they eat corn and soy when they are adults. The amount of grass finished cows is less than 1% off all dairy and beef. You're completely delusional if you actually think the milk you're getting from the supermarket comes from cows that are grazing on grass all day until they die.

coconut milk (ie the canned type you make curries with) is cheating, but clearly better than the other milks, just be aware that even a small serving of say ~60ml is going to be 4 times the calories as a milk alternative, saturated fat bomb. maybe a replacement for heavy cream for americans, but not a 'milk replacement'.

You're arguing against a misconception. Nobody who understands this shit says that phytoestrogens or xenoestrogens reduce testosterone levels, or damage sperm, for that matter. Neither do they increase estrogen. Dumbasses like to make those claims, I'll give you that, but they're wrong.

What they do is bind to estrogen receptors and activate them. Even then, it's not that simple. Some phytoestrogens bind to the receptors but send a weaker signal than normal estrogen, so in effect, they actually reduce the effects of estrogen in the body by prohibiting stronger signals. Others are stronger than natural estrogen, and so increase the effects of estrogen in the body. Many xenoestrogens are a different beast altogether, because the body has difficulty eliminating them in the outputs, so they often accumulate in bodyfat and do their thing repeatedly.

      >Almond milk was used as a substitute for animal milk in the Middle Ages in areas that followed Catholic fasting doctrines. Historian Carolyn Walker Bynum notes that: For example, a thin split-pea puree, sometimes enriched with fish stock or almond milk (produced by simmering ground almonds in water), replaced meat broth on fast days; and almond milk was a general (and expensive) substitute for cow's milk.[6]
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almond_milk

      >Almond milk has been a fixture of European cookbooks since at least the 1200s, as it was seen as a nutritious alternative to meat and animal-based milk during fasting periods like Lent. And some research indicates that almond milk’s history might go back even farther in the Middle East.

From those labels and the typefaces it all looks like moronic hippy shit designed by school kids.

Soy milk is interesting and I think it can stand up on its own as a drink rather than just a substitute for proper milk

Oat milk is good and in my experience the closest you can get to whole milk in texture but since I have no dietary restrictions I'd rather just have real milk.
Coconut milk is good for cooking Thai stuff as well as making golden milk and other froufrou Thai drinks. It's my favorite to drink on its own.
Pea milk is interesting for the macros (8g per 12oz). I don't love the taste but I don't hate it either. I use it in protein shakes.
Soy milk froths pretty well and I like to use it for matcha lattes. I also use it to make tofu pudding. It's a little too sweet for me outside of these instances.
Almond milk is bottom tier for me. Watery, not that tasty. I also read that it's the worst plant milk if you care about it being environmentally friendly.

I have yet to try cashew, flax, and rice milk.

Thank you for reading my milk blog. This post has inspired me to pick up the last 3 next time I'm at the store.

Soy milk is great but only if the box is covered in moon runes. Western soy milk goes through so much processing to remove the soy flavour but it ends up tasting like chemicals
